I've noticed a common theme. Many women are complaining that their dr gave them bcp as a treatment and had they gotten a "real treatment" things could have been improved, prevented and whatnot.
I was given bcp (diane 35) as treatment and this is starting to scare me. Im 18 and been on it for about 2.5 years. Do you have any suggestions for treatments or are bcp sufficient unless trying to conceive?
I was given it as a treatment first too, but then there was a clot scare so I was switched to something else.
Since you've been taking it, have your blood tests and symptoms resolved any? I would hope your dr. had you tested periodically to see if the testorone and the FSH:LH ratios improved or if you are IR - if that improved? Why not request another round of bloodwork including glucose/insulin testing?
If you are IR and have been being treated for a couple of years with no success, it might be worth investigating things further and maybe trying metformin.
If you don't have a lot of symptoms - extra hair where you don't want it, thinning hair where you do, acne, insulin resistance, acanothis nigrecans, you're probably being treated fine.
He hasn't really been keeping on top of me. A gyno diagnosed me, and perscribed me diane 35. My doctor I have seen once since and he only gave me a years refill so I have to go back in August.
I am not IR and do not have acanothis nigrecans, but it helped my acne. I just pluck my chin hairs myself.
Thanks for the input. I think I'll make my appointment sooner, request some bloodwork and possible better meds.
I think that seems like a good idea - it's sad, but I think we all sort of have to be responsible for our own medical care. It seems the doctors are stretched to thin to really be in charge.

Started losing weight on 4/20/08. Met my first two goals. Next goal: 202, the half-way mark, and a 10 point BMI loss!

I was on Yasmin for 6 years to prevent a baby. Last May, DH and I started TTC. While I was off the pill, PCOS reared its ugly head...bad. I gained 50 lbs literally overnight and grew a fine beard along with all the other classic symptoms. I am sad to say that I will be starting Yasmin this coming weekend. Not for contraceptive use, but to get this darn weight off, have a period and then go for a monitored cycle (clomid, injectables, IUI to get pregnant) I'm also just started metformin.
Hopefully this Yasmin will make me feel like a normal person and promote a healthier weight to conceive on.
