Default Becoming a hairy esthetician?

Hi all.

I really need some help/motivation. For years, I have dreamt of becoming an esthetcian. Well, an opportunity has come up and I'm enrolling in an esthetics program that will start in 2 weeks.
I am DEATHLY afraid of class though. I have excessive facial hair on my chin and cheeks. My chin is a particular mess. I've been tweezing for a few years and the hairs are very coarse and the skin on my chin gets red from tweezing. I'm afraid the other people in the class will think I am some sort of freak when we all have to practice facials etc on each other.
Is anyone else here an esthetician? Or get regular facials and have found a way to cope with the embarassment when the other person notices the facial hair?
I am able to cover up the facial hair pretty well with makeup, but I'm afraid once the makeup comes off, I will freak.
Should I just suck it up? Keep telling myself if I can get through the embarassment of 6 months, I'll never have to see these people ever again?

Thank you for your advice and support!
Jasmine

Hi,

I'm an esthetician, and I love it. You'll have a lot of fun at school, and your skin will never look better because you'll be getting facials every other day!

As for the hair, don't worry about it. I met one of my best friends in class who had a hairy chin, and it was no big deal at all. She always made me wax her! You'll soon discover that almost all women have some sort of facial hair.

This is a tricky career to enter into... Don't give up if your first job doesn't work out; there are plenty of different avenues to take in this field, that's what I've learned. I'm actually about to open my own place in about 3 weeks where I'll be doing facials, I'm really excited.

Try and get a job at a laser center when you're done with school, since you already have the compassion for people with hair. The medical spa area is difficult to get a job in, but give it a shot. Buddy up with someone at school, someone you can trust. I don't think she'll be telling everyone "look at this hairy girl over here." That was never the case when I went to school, and we had a definite variety of people!

Good luck!

You could try magic cream (a cream for men's beards, there's a thread floating around recently in this section about it). I've never used it, but there are a few raves in the thread and I would assume that it would be pretty good because it can get just below skin level, deeper than a razor.

~anyway~ I don't think you have to worry! Almost every woman has facial hair of some kind. Plus, if these people are going to be in the business of making people beautiful, they have to understand that most people won't come in already looking like supermodels! I honestly wouldn't worry about it. I think people are a lot more understanding than we give them credit for, especially in a class like this where everyone there is obviously comfortable being hands-on with other women.
