Been to the doctor, re: depression, been given Prozac
Hello ladies,
thanks to everyone here who encouraged me to go and see a doctor. I have been depressed for about a year now, with bouts of feeling REALLY bad before my periods, and I was scared something might happen.
Today I plucked up the courage to go to the doctor. I feared she would not take my problem seriously but she was very helpful.
She gave me three boxes of fluoxetinhydrochloride ("Prozac"), a referral for counselling and a brochure about depression, and she recommended bloodwork for hormones and for checking my thyroid.
I am scared of taking antidepressants but I am also scared that I'll lose my partner, job and my friends.
Thanks y'all for encouraging me to go and see a doctor.

I totally understand I was given Prazac 2 weeks ago and was so scared to start it, but I did and I've taken it for a week and I could tell a slight difference almost immediately.
Everyone says you cant feel its affect for 2-3 weeks but I haven't wanted to cry every 3-4 hours everday so for me its been helping so far.
I know its hard to start depressions meds but you should really give it a chance
GOOD LUCK
Thanks! I'll definitely start it. How much do you take? I've been told to take 10 mg daily for a few days and then up my dose to 20 mg daily (taking the pills in the morning).
How have you been feeling on Prozac so far? The doctor told me it can upset my stomach a bit the first days.

I started on 20 mg. and it did upset my stomach for the first few days more heartburn, burps and I didnt have trouble going to the restroom like I normally do. I actually lost 4 pounds which sure helped my depression a little bit. Now this week I'm worrying about eating too much and gaining it back because the prozac is not making me nausea like it was at first. Sounds like your dr gave you more info than mine did and thats a good thing when it comes to depression
Keep in touch
((HUGS)) I am so glad that you decided to see a Dr. If you ever need anything please PM me!!

I put off asking for help for so long because I didn't want to be taking antidepressants - madness really!
I'm still soldiering through my side effects at the moment, lol, so I'm wishing you few side effects and a quick response to the meds...... I hope you feel better soon

I don't care what Tom Cruise says - Prozac is a miracle drug in my life.
I take 40 mg daily and have for nearly 18 months now. I used to take 20mg but my doctor (who is also awesome btw) and I agreed that we should bump it up to 40mg when I was diagnosed with PCOS because I'm a recovering bullimic and we didn't want my need to lose some weight to spiral into something ugly.
For what it's worth, I've had relatively few negative side effects - although pretty much anything that would stop the 3+ hour crying jags I was experiencing back when would be welcome by comparison. I don't miss those.
Last, I feel strongly that talk therapy also helps a lot. I did really well on just the meds but once I started regular therapy (about a year ago) I started to feel TONS better.
Daughty I am so thrilled to see that you went and spoke with someone and are the road to recovery. With all the negative publicity anti-depressants have been given lately, I can see why you might be frightened, but trust me, these medications can change your life for the very best and help you feel like your old self again.

Yes, I am scared, and I do feel a bit nauseous.
However, I read on a German message board about depression... they were discussion potential long-term risks, and I really agree with what one poster said:
if a depressed person cannot get off the sofa, get some exercise, eats worthless food and maybe drinks too much (because that's what many depressed people do), it is at least as detrimental to health and longevity as an antidepressant, possibly even more.
This thought is making me feel a little calmer... because admittedly, I AM anxious about the prozac...

Depression is something I battle daily. I have been taking Prozac for about a 1 1/2 years. I have also started taking Effexor XR. I have anxiety for which I take Ativan. I used to really hate taking all my medications, for other illness as well. I have however learned I FEEL so much better when I am on them. If I skip some I never skip my "head pills". Don't get me wrong; I still have difficult days, but the medication helps. You should be proud of yourself, accepting help is a big step. Good for you!
About 2 years ago, i was put on celexa.. and i hated the fact i had to take a pill to make me feel normal. and i would stop them as often as possible.. then i had a neverous break down and i realize the pills are there to help me, not trying to hurt me..
Now im taking zoloft and im happy to take them every day.. cause they make me happya nd keep me smiling..
Good luck!

i have upped my dose to 20 mg/ day now (was supposed to take only 10 mg for a few days).
So far I haven't noticed any effect. The nausea is gone, and I am extremely hungry. I am wolfing down any food in sight and I am worried I might gain weight (which I do not really need *sigh*)
