Question before beginning adoption

Did any of you ladies start buying things for your child before you began the adoption process? I am suppose to start taking the training class in September and get ready for the home study. I have been looking into buying a toddler bed etc... but I do not want to start buying these things and then things do not work out as planned.

I am waiting to take classes in September too and honestly I cannot bring myself to buy stuff yet. We are going to do foster to adopt. We have gone and priced things but when we first started TTC I bought some baby things. It was not anything major but small things. After we hit the point of TTC for almost three years I got mad and threw it all away. I couldn't stand the sight of the box in the closet.

I am too scared to buy anything.

Although I still had major baby stuff from when my 1st DD was little, with my 2nd daughter I didn't really buy extra things until my papers were sent to China. I still felt pretty confident it would all work out so I wasn't too worried about it.

Best of luck on your journey! Be sure to keep us posted

My biggest fear is that I will buy stuff that will not fit or will not like. I've bought a few toy cars a few pieces of clothes that I am sure will be to big but they were on sale and I thought they were cute (could not help myself)!! I have been thinking of buying a toddler bed and other things so I can have the room together before the home study is started.
Oomis when in September will your classes start mine start September 7th maybe we can keep each other updated on our progress?!

DH and I tried adopting about 4 years ago and we bought a bed at that time. I picked up a lot of other stuff at yard sales over the years. So we have a room all set up already. Right now it is full of other things as storage.

I'm not trying to be in your business but what happened that you did not adopt 4 years ago? Did you just change your mind? that's my fear I'm going to buy all of this stuff and things don't go as planned.

I tried posting earlier but it didnt go thru

My DH and I tried for many years before adopting and in those years I collected some items but ended up not keeping most of it becuz it was out of date...I think new things come along all the time and if I were doing it all over again I would make a book of the things I wanted to buy along with pictures and even the cash to buy those things once I knew a baby/child was coming

Just my 2 centinos

Take care,
Amy

No it's fine. Basically we went gong-ho and did everything we could to try to match. We were matched though a facilitator with a lady out of state who said that she was PG with BR twin girls. It ended up being a scam, but it ended before we put any money into it. Thats how we found out, because the facilitator wanted the money NOW. We wanted proof of the PG first. Then the facilitator became hard to contact then when I find did get them they said that the lady was scamming them. I half way think that they were scamming us. It was emotionally hard. Then after that I got aneixty about it and we just put it on the back burning.

I always thought that if it just happened it would be great because it would be meant to be. It looks like that might be happening. Someone I worked with one day knows a man who is helping a PG find a family for her baby. We talked with him last night and he is going to tell her about us. She's about 6 months along.

I'm nervous but excited.

Bacially we have what we would need other then a bath tub/bath supplies, Baby Swing, diapers and fomula. We have a lot of stuff...like I said mostly yard sale things. (Also when we got the bed, we got a carseat)

We waited... until we went thru our classes and they told us that we had to have the room set up! UMMMMMM so we went out purchased the crib and twin bed dresser and changing table. Then we were put on hold. We just found out about 2 weeks ago we are getting a new caseworker. So be prepared to be told you need to get it by your homestudy, but I would wait until they say NOW. lol

Best of luck

Roberta - I was worried about that. We just had some friends who went through their homestudy and they were told they did not have to have the room ready...they just wanted to see the room and hear about what you are going to get. But I guess each state and probably each agency is different. I don't want to go set up a room and spend a ton of money just to wait and wait and wait. I am just scared though. I guess this comes from years of getting my hopes up kwim?

Understandable... I would wait and see what they say! I hate but love my childrens room... it gives me hope and a place to reflect and pray for them. At the same time it gives me sadness that its still empty.

Actually the social worker suggested we have a few things just in case something happened quick. We ended up buying almost everything that was neutral and then when we were matched and knew she was a girl we... or rather I (LOL ) went crazy.

Good luck to you!!! It's an exciting time isn't it?
