Default The beginning of the road...

This is my story.

My name is Stacie Meyer. I am 21 years old and was recently married on March 9. 2002 to the love of my life Luke.

I started having trouble with my periods in high school, and I remember several times thinking I was pregnant, but eventually my period would come. I was also having trouble with depression, and my parents took me to a therapist who referred me to a psychiatrist. They put me on Zoloft and sent me on my merry way. The Zoloft didn't do too much, screwed up my sleep and concentration even more. The whole time this stuff was going on my mother kept asking the family doctor to check my thyroid because she though the dark hair on my face was abnormal (she is a cosmetologist). The thyroid was fine and the doc said it was probably just the way I was. Finally at age 17 my gyno put me on ortho tricyclen.

Obviously the bcp regulated my periods, but anyone who has done research knows that these are not REAL periods. Well after a year or so I still had the hair on my face and was getting fatigued all of the time. I started to gain weight horrible. The doctor told me I was at the age where my metabolism was slowing and not to eat cheese! Well, I went off the bcp, gained more weight, had worse hair growth, flaky scalp, thinning hair, and developed acne worse than I ever did as a teenager. I also stopped having periods except every 2-3 months, then every 4-5 months, then none for 7 months. Finally after gaining 70 pounds in 18-24 months they got concerned. They told me they thought I had Cushings, they checked my thyroid and told me nothing was wrong.

I had a friend who told me that I reminded her a lot of her cousin (my symptoms, my weight around the middle). She told me her cousin had some ovary disease but she didn't know the name. After doing LOTS of research I ran across PCOS and thought...This is me. I kept asking my doctors about it and they didn't seem to care. Finally I talked them into running tests and they finally said YES you have PCOS. Then she said. "We really don't know much about the disease." This was just in December of 2001, at age 21. From then I have pretty much been on my own. I take glucophage now, and have just made my first appointment with the reproductive endo. Plan to TTC soon, hopefully I will lose a few pounds (or more) before I start trying.

I just want to add that this site has been a well of knowledge for me. I am a medical transcriptionist and had read all kinds of medical info on PCOS, but had never been in contact with anyone else with the disease. I feel less alone and more hopeful about my future with all of my cysters success stories to look at! As a recently diagnosed cyster, I look to the veterans for advice, support and friendship.
