Hello-
I am new to this site and to participating in message boards so please bear with me . I was recently diagonsised with PCOS and at my last set of tests my Dr. told me I was border line insulin resistance any body have any good information about being insulin resistance. I have read that it can be common in women with PCOS.
I am also Insulin Resistant. I am currently learning how to eat properly all over again! At 30 I thought I knew what was healthy. It's easy to maintain if you have the knowledge and tools, but can be disasterous if you don't. Can I ask some questions?
Are you overweight? Does your dr have you on any meds? Did your dr make any suggestions regarding IR?
There is a book called "The Insulin Resistance Diet" I bought at www.barnesandnoble.com , it has helped me so much! It's the first "diet" I actually like.
I know this can be frustrating sometimes, so if you ever need to talk, you can PM me anytime.
Welcome to soul cysters. If you haven't yet I recommend reading this page, it is really helpful Insulin Resistance Syndrome: PCOS Mentioned. I also take the Metformin and it does help. I hope you find something that works for you. Good luck!
Thanks for the info-
Here is my story. I was pretty normal as a teenager with my periods up until I was about 18, never at which time was I overweight. At 18 I started becoming irregular going up to 5 months without getting a period. At that time my family doctor put me on the pill. After I got married, my husband and I were going to start our family so I went off the pill, that was over a year and a half ago. My local Doctor sent me to a fertilty specalist who never diagonsied me, just started me on metformin and clomid hoping that would do the trick. After 3 months of driving over 2 hours one way multiple times a month, I switched Dr's to one closer at the Mayo Clinic. THANK GOD!!! He has been very helpful and actually made the diagonsis of PCOS. He took me off the metformin so he could do some more blood work cholestrol, trigclyerides, glucose fasting test, etc. It was after the test that he told me I was not pre-daibetic, but border line insulin resistant, of course at the time I was so overwhelmed that I did not ask any questions and now that I am looking up info on the wonderful internet it is all as clear as mud.
My current Dr. does not have me on any meds at the current time, he wants to see if my PCOS is weight induced. I am slightly overweight. I am 27 years old 5 ft 9 inches and weighed 202 pounds when I got the diagonsis. I am now down 12 pounds to 190 with another 15 to go.
I think that is my story, I sincerley appreciate any and all suggestions and helpful information you all have. Thank god there is a website with such great women that can all relate.
Most studies and researchs point to PCOS being genetic, not weight induced. About 1/2 of all cysters are thin, with no weight problems at all. PCOS has so many symptoms and docs dissagree on what the standards of diagnosis should be. Some docs call IR prediabetes, others don't. It seems Metformin is the standard treatment for most women with PCOS even those without any insulin problems. It does greatly lower your risks of getting diabetes, even if you don't have insulin problems now. Even mild insulin resistance can cause diabetes. There are some great articles on the articles board about IR, PCOS diagonsis, treatment and origins.
Hello, I am new to the site. I was told it's likely that I am insulin resistant and am on Metformin 500mg three times a day. I have been taking the medication about 6 months. My cycle is almost back to normal, but I am finding it difficult to shift the weight. I'm currently about 190lb
Not sure about PCOS being weight induced, although I have heard that weight loss/gain can effect symtoms. I'm one of the "lean" cysters and Met still worked for me even without IR. I don't really think the DRs have figured out exactly why Met helps with PCOS. I'm just happy that it does.

I know that everyone is different and different things work for different people, but I am Insulin resistant. I bought a book called "The Insulin Resistance Diet" at www.barnesandnoble.com and it has truly been a blessing. It is so easy to live with and work with. I have learned so much already and I just started not too long ago. I decided to take my time and get it right. Since this is something I will have to live with the rest of my life, I try to look at it as a new way of living. I guess you could say re-learning how to live. I'm slowly getting my life and my body adjusted so as to not go into shock! lol You might look into it and see if you want to try it out. If you ever need to talk, you can Pm Me anytime.
Hi there and welcome to S/C. There's loads of info round here, so take your time to sift through it and get informed. We're here to answer any questions you have.
PCOS is not really weight induced, rather weight gain is a symptom of PCOS. however it is also a huge factor with IR. Many women (not all) suffer from both conditions (like me). Weight gain in insulin resistance is generally caused by the bodies failure to correctly process the food we eat, even more so if they are high carb, due to excess insulin produced by the pancreas.
This is not always the case, however. I reccommend that you speak to your Dr. once again about this issue.
The IR diet is a great book, and there are loads of books written about PCOS and IR. A quick search on Amazon will do the trick.
Big hugs!!

Take metformin first and foremost to get sugars stable and prevent diabetes.
