My mom’s doctor wanted to test her for PCOS due to a problem she’s having. She told me she said no because she don’t think it would matter much at her age. She thinks she’s too old to worry about it. (I don’t think she’s old at all 45yrs). My question is, what problems could occur if she does have this? I may be wrong, but I thought that once you go through menopause, they symptoms subside. She had a partial hysterectomy about 15years ago, keeping her ovaries. I don’t believe she would have this because she don’t really have any of the other symptoms. She had problems with her cycle being too long and too heavy, but since her hysterectomy I believe that’s it. I’m just wondering if after a certain age or part of life happens if PCOS kinda goes away, or are there still things to worry about? If there’s a reason she should find out if she has it or not, I’d like to talk her into it. A weird side note, she is an identical twin. I believe my aunt does have this because she had a lot of problems growing up and wasn’t able to conceive until age 30. I know she had a lot of D&C’s at a young age, and has had cysts on her ovaries. I don’t believe she’s been officially tested or dx’d. I just don’t see how there could be identical twins one with it and one without.

Can't wait to start WW again and loose the other 15lbs I gained with the last pregnancy and the 30lbs I still needed to lose with the first one.

She should absolutely be tested. Even if she is not interested in her fertility or any of the other symptoms of PCOS (weight, hair growth or loss etc...), having PCOS increases the risk of developing other health problems, such as diabetes, heart problems and some types of cancer. She should be tested and, if she has it, she should be treated by a PCOS knowledgeable doctor to manage her risks.

Good post, I second that!
Even though some PCOS problems aren't necessarily issues when you're older, the problems that ARE issues can make your life miserable, and ultimately kill you. Diabetes is no joke. Your Mom should do anything she can to optimize her health at this point to avoid this disease if at all possible.

Obesity, very mild hirsuitism now almost gone with age and met, seriously thinning hair. Regular cycles on met.
Diagnosed with diabetes 8/2003
As far as I know, she doesn’t have any insulin problems. She hasn’t been tested though, so I guess she could. She’s gained some weight in the past few years, but I just chalked that up to her quitting smoking. I think I will have to talk to her about this. She doesn’t go back to the Endo until the 9th of next month, so maybe I can talk her into getting a few extra tests ran just to be on the safe side.
