I've battled acne ever since I was 12 years old, and now I'm 41. I've tried EVERYTHING to combat it, and through the years I've learned that I have a terrible sensitivity to benzoyl peroxide. Nothing else (prescripition, OTC, etc.) worked either. However, about three years ago, my derm put me on Klaron lotion. It's a prescription topical lotion (topical sulfa), and I started to see a difference within a week. In a month, my cystic acne at age 38 disappeared, and it has stayed away.
Klaron doesn't have any odor or taste, doesn't bleach your clothing or hair, or cause your skin to flake or become red. It's a clear gel/lotion that goes on and dries quickly with no tight feeling. The only drawback is if you are allergic to sulfa medications, you can't use it.
I have occasional flare-ups on my chest and back since I don't use it regularly there, but once I see a pimple come up, I treat it with Klaron, and it goes away pretty quickly.
I just wanted to put this out as a suggestion if you haven't tried it before and can tolerate sulfa medications. I really, really, REALLY wish this stuff had been on the market when I was a teenager!!!
Hope someone can use this information.
Julie

Beth, I just went to the Klaron website. It is not known whether it's OK to use while TTC or while pregnant, but it's probably not advisable if they don't know. Here' s the link to the PDF document: http://www.dermik.com/prod/klaron/klaron_PI.pdf
Hope that helps.

I don't know the difference between a 'sulfa' antibiotic for acne and the acne OTC 'sulfur' are they related? I've tried about everything, I've heard of Klaron but I haven't actually tried it... My skin is severely sensitive to sulfur thats in OTC acne products..masks, lotions, etc..
i used it and it left burn marks on my face for a week because im allergic to sulfur based antibiotics and all sulfur and sulfites.Be careful if you have sulfa allergies.

YIKES! I have ultra sensitive skin, and I'm allergic to the sulfur, but I don't think I've ever been on any of the sulfa antiobiotics so I don't know if I'm allergic to them..hrm..
Could anyone tell me some examples of sulfides/sulfa medications? I have tried about every medication out there so far besides accutane and klaron..and am thinking about making an appointment to try to get some klaron if I'm not going to be allergic or sensitive to the stuff...
Thanks for the info, Julie! I have to go off of bcp's in a few days due to them affecting my energy levels (extreme fatigue from the estrogen ) and a rise in blood pressure and I'm kind of freaking out about the imminent return of my acne. I'll be seeing my OB on Wednesday for a referral to a dermatologist. I'll bring up the name of that lotion you are using. Thanks!

LaurieAnn, sulfa antibiotics include Septra and Bactrim that doctors can prescribe for urinary tract infections. You can probably check the WebMD website for more.
Julie, good luck going off BCPs! I hope the Klaron works for you.

Can anyone tell me what Pharmacy carries this? I can't find it on drugstore.com or on CVS.com. I would also like to ask my DERM for some this sat when I go. Thanks.
