It seems like such a simple exercise, but wow does it work! I did this yesterday just for a few minutes, and today my side are killing me! Goodbye lovehandles

Drinking lots of water before/during/after exercise stops the lactic acid from pooling in the muscles and causing the pain you get for the next couple of days.

My Mood: Points: 42,208.79 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 42,208.79 | Hi, ak82!
This is an interesting post to me because I just bought some little 2 pound handweights. I want to use them effectively, but safely. I walk every weekday, so my legs are shaping up, but I need to tone my arms, especially the "old lady underarm wattles"...you know, that part of your upper arm, that, after you wave to someone keeps waving! UGH!
I intend to get a book from the library or look up on the net how to do arm exercises safely. I don't want to hyperextend or cause damage to my muscles. That's another reason why I only bought 2 pound weights. I like to start slow.
Anyone else around here use weights to tone their arms? Does it really work? How often do you use them?
And Tas I appreciated your tip about the water. I didn't know about that! KKat |

I think I'd become waterlogged if i drank anymore! I never do weights, so I'm just not used to that feeling. It's a good feeling though

Swinging them when I walk (Okay, sounds funny I know ) I do arm exercises and they do help to build the muscle up but I can't believe the difference in them since I added that little bit to my walking.
I think the exercises build the muscle up but adding the extra movement to walking gets rid of some of the fat. So both together make a difference really fast. I haven't been doing either for long but a couple of people have asked if I have been using weights. And that was while I was only doing the swinging bit, lol!
Okay, so I now have the habit of sucking my stomach in when I walk and swinging my arms. But at least where I walk (along fields and canal towpaths) mostly the only other people I see are dogwalkers, and we are a strange bunch anyway!!!!!
I have two arm exercises I like, dumbell curls for your biceps, with concentrated curls for definition and there is one that is really helpful for your triceps. I'll try to find a link to the exercise and come back and edit! I started with 8lbs and 10 reps but I used to work out in a men's gym when I was younger (as I used to date someone who ran it) and I still tend to follow more of a men's exercise programme!!!
I found them; these three exercises are a total arm weights workout. http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/Biceps/DBCurl.html http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/...ationCurl.html http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/...ArmTriExt.html
I would recommend that for the final exercise you sit in a straight backed chair (like a dining chair) with your bottom pushed back in the seat and your back straight up against the back of the chair. This just ensures you don't swing or twist your back. Your body should be still it should just be your arm that moves. If you find it a bit trickly to begin with as you do the exercise with your right arm, use your left arm to just hold your right arm steady by putting the palm of your left hand flat against your right tricep etc.
Good luck with your exercises!
