Angry Best Magazine

Mum has just brought Best magazine home and there's an article in in about a woman with PCOS, the tagline on the front of the mag says "The miracle diet that stopped me being fat and hairy!", turned to the page, er.... this diet actually took her to 16 stone (from 18), involves eating chicken, liver, or 'hot fruit' (wtf??) every 15 mins *vomit* and then she managed to conceive because (and this is a direct quote) "There was less fat around my uterus so I could get pregnant" What??? Never heard that one before! Oh yeah, and she still has the facial hair, so how the hell did this diet stop her being 'fat and hairy' when she weighed 16 stone before she got pregnant, and still has hirsutism??

I mean, how this promotes awareness I don't know! Not a single mention of metformin or anything, no "About PCOS" column on the page telling people what to look out for, it really pisses me off. This woman apparently lost 3 stone in 3 weeks on this diet, now not only is that extremely unhealthy, but she must have been eating a fair bit before the diet to lose that much so quickly without meds.

Some quotes from the article:

The doctor said "You'll just have to accept you may never have children"

"Although I still have a problem with facial hair it's better since I changed my eating habits"

Oh yeah, and the link they give at the foot of the article is for bloody Verity, nice one Best.

She sayts that her free NHS fertility treatment failed, and that going on a diet and taking vitamin B made her conceive in 4 weeks. Now, as someone not interested in having kids and just wanting to get healthy it has really annoyed me that the only bad sides of PCOS mentioned in Best are the difficulty of conceiving, weight gain and facial hair, what about the other health risks? What about the fact that so many of us have had to put our lives on hold because of this horrible illness?

I think an email campaign is in order, best@natmags.co.uk

On the plus side there's a great article about 'the perfect shave' in the beauty section
