Well I had an exciting and interesting 4th of July!!!! I started having severe abdominal and ovarian pain and thought oh boy I ahve a cyst about to burst, which most of you with cystic ovaries have expereinced.
When I got to the ER, the took a urine test and to my surprise I was PG!
They all started congratulating me but, something still did not feel right.
When they did an ultrasound it revealed an 8cm cyst on my ovary and there was no evidence of a viable pregnancy anywhere.
It turns out that from the PCOS I had an enlarged cyst( Nothing out of the ordinary) and when I got pg the cysts fused together with the fertilized egg and they just kept growing in to a hemoraging cyst.
The cyst and ectopic both ruptured and as a result I blew out my ovary and fallopian tube and had surgery in the middle of the night.
In any case, I was told that women with PCOS are at high risk for ectopic pregnancies and if I had the one, it was most likely I would have another since I have cysts on my other fallopian tube nad ovary.
It never seems to end with PCOS and the havoc it wreaks!!!
I am still recouperating from surgery and hope to be back up and running within the next few days. I am basically on bed rest for 4 weeks (YUCK)
So, I now have to decide what I want to do. One doc recoomended the use of Mirena becasue it releases a small amount of progesterone that can help with the PCOS.
Any thoughts on the Mirena?
All the Best,

Sorry to hear about that! I hope you recover well. I would take the doctors recommendation. There are a lot of successful pregnancies on here. Thanks for sharing your story! It is something that I am aware of now and didn't realize could happen to me.

I had a doctors appointment yesterday to talk about my iron levels and the mirena was brought up as a suggestion to lighten my periods, however the risks of an ectopic pregnancy are high and I couldn't imagine the complications on my fertility of having cysts and an ectopic preg. She basically told me I could take the risk but because I still had other viable contraception options (The pill is working fine), then she wouldn't recommend it.

I know just how you feel. When I was 16 I had a eptopic pregnancy and now I have a big hole in my right fallopian tube. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. I hope all the best for you in the future.

altabes, I hope your feeling better soon.
My Mom had a similair situation when she was pg with me. 1st of all, I think my Mom had PCOS @ my age (but back then I don't really think it was dx or really discussed as PCOS).
Well anyway she got pg if me as a "opps" (she says I wasn't, I agrue that.. but that a different story all together)... anyway back to the story, when she didn't get her peroid for a couple mths and feeling lile s**t in the mornings, she finally went to the dr to see what was going on.
Since her peroids were very irregular she didn't think that she was pg. Well SURPRISE she was close to 3 mths pg! When the Dr did an u/s to see "me" (i.e the fetus) they found that a cyst was laying right on the fetus and that it was extermly dangerous that she could lose the fetus. The Dr did surgey the very next day and monitored her very closely for the reminding mths until she delivered (just to make sure the cyst didn't return).
Good Luck!

My first pregnancy was ectopic too. I lost part of my left tube when I was 21 from that. I worried the entire time that I was TTC that it would happen again or pregnancy would never happen. However, much to our surprise and delight...it did and it was intrauterine - just like it was supposed to be. So, it can work out. You just never know what your body can do. The funny part is, when they did my first sonogram to find my current pregnancy - they saw a corpus luteal cyst on the left ovary - the side with the partial tube. Now, I don't know whether its even possible that the egg found its way down that damaged tube to my uterus or if they just missed a different corpus luteum on the right! Who knows.

My heart goes out to you. I too had an ectopic in july of last year. Thankfully, mine was discovered in time to give me medication to avoid surgery. My thoughts are with you.
I'm sorry to hear about your ordeal. I am a CMA at an OB/GYN office we have had a lot of success with the Mirena. A lot of women seem to like it, however the Mirena is'nt for everyone I would weigh the benifits with the risks and other possible contraception routes.
