Default Bipolar and left handed, or right?

Hi there, I know this is a weird question, but I am so curious. Out of those of us who are bipolar, I was wondering how many were left handed and how many were right handed. I am left handed. Does anyone one know if maybe there was a poll or study to see if there was a higher prevalance of bipolar of either one? Thank you for satisfying my curiosity!!!!

What a funny question! Now I'm curious. I have bi-polar disorder and I'm left handed. A friend of mine is bi-polar as well and he is left handed. There could be a link.

Well, I'm ambidexterous, but for the most part I favor my left too. Hope that doesn't throw off your study! But my mom is bp too and she is right-handed. I think it makes sense that left-brained ppl would get bp since it seems to enhance creativity (not including myself!) Let us know if you find anything conclusive.

Sorry to throw off your perfect run here, but I've been diagnosed with both and I'm right handed. My father, who I swear is an untreated bipolar, is left handed though! Does that count?

Odd ball out,
Dana

I was just curious anyhow, it is interesting to see, I know quite a few people who are bi polar as well, I guess about half are left haded, but that's kinda a substantial amount, considering that the majority of the population is right handed.

bipolar and left-handed. i think it has more to do with the way our brains process things though; lefties are more "right-brained" creative people in general- and what do our manic (or hypomanic) episodes tend to be like? at least for me, that's when my art exists. i'm energetic and i can write and create until i crash again. so that's probably where the connection lies.

Smile Left handed and Bipolar

Tonight I googled Left handed and bipolar and found out that there might be a link. I asked my friend if she knew anyone who was bipolar and she said her uncle was and he was left handed. Anyways Im Ambidextrous but Write with my left hand. The only reason I signed up for this forum was to express this with anyone who will listen. It is true also that Jimi Hendrix was left handed and he wrote "Manic Depression is a frustrated mess". Manic Depression is also called BIPOLAR Disorder. Also Albert Einstein (Left Handed) was Obsessive compulsive another form of Bipolar disorder. So yeah the Right hemisphere of the brain should contain mood swings. Anyone else agree?

Hope you don't mind the intrusion, as I'm not bipolar, but my mother was. She was right handed BUT was raised during a generation where they "trained" lefties to use their right hand, so it's possible that she might have been a natural lefty. I never thought to ask her or her parents before they passed away, so I'll never know.

That is interesting, though, that there could be a connection.

I did a quick search of the psych journal database, and while there is a link between left-handedness and schizophrenia, they are still trying to find out if there is a link between hand preference and bipolar. One study found a slight correlation, but not enough to prove anything conclusive.

I am bipolar, and left-handed, write poetry, play piano by ear,draw....
Diagnosed 11 years ago.... there's always good and bad to everything. I think we are in good company, if you think of all of the artists and fabulously talented people blessed/cursed with bipolar disorder.

One thing to remember, is that for centuries left-handed folks were forced to be right-handed, some times beaten, because we were considered evil, witches..... to get up on the wrong side of the bed really means to get up on the left side of the bed. So, most folks positioned their bed with the left side to the wall. Dextral...right-handed.....Sinistral (spelling)..Left-handed (sinister,evil...)
So, it is difficult to tell for sure the bipolar/left-handed theory due to the history of it all.

But, I believe in it!! Have wondered myself, have asked the keeper of my brain (Dr. So and So) and others, and most have not thought of it.

The world is still made for the right-handed, teachers try to encourage young students to use their right hand, and parents still hope their child will be right-handed, if they only knew!!

We made up our right mind
to be left-handed.

I write with my right hand... however, until recently, most children were "retrained" to write with their right hand. I am bipolar, and I use my left hand for everything but writing... in fact, my dad's always made fun of me because I hold silverware and things like that incorrectly.
Here's another wierd thing for you to ponder... my left hand is the one with male characteristics (finger length)... my right hand has more "normal/female" measurements.
