i went to the psychiatrist this week and she diagnosed me bipolar, type 2 (which i already knew), primarily mixed state.
i know when i'm hypomanic. i know when i am depressed. but it is hard for me to discern what makes it a mixed state. i was wondering if any of you are mixed state bipolars and if you could please share what types of symptoms you have while in a mixed state and how you can differentiate it from up/down.

thank you. i will have to take a look at it. i know that in a mixed state, any of the symptoms are fair game. it's hard for me to sort out which symptoms are from the depression and which are from the hypomania. it's very frustrating.
i was so irritable this morning that i totally went off on my roommate for no reason. i felt like a total @ss immediately afterward, but i mean, i shouldn't be going off on people.

I'm new too in my understanding--but when depressed I barely sleep (although I'd like to), and can be real grouch, although not with the energy to be actually angry. I think this may qualify as a mixed state.
Hypomani seems to be really hard to put your finger on--when bipolar was first suggested to me, I completely denied it in part because I thought manic stages involved at least feeling good. I never feel good--just more and less bad.
Hope my rambling helped--at least you're not alone.

thanks bethann. *hugs* it's nice to know the someone else "gets it."
i tend to oversleep when depressed. i get restless and have terrible insomnia when i am hypomanic. the irritability is usually part of my hypomania, but i sometimes get it when i'm down. i've got a generalized "i feel like cr@p" feeling- my therapist says that is pretty much a mixed state.

I have bipolar type 1. I have more manic episodes than depression but when I am depressed it hits me hard. I sleep a LOT when in a depression mood. I understand about going off on people for no reason. I am a real ***** sometimes. Right now I'm not on any meds which isn't good for me. So my moods can change with the snap of a finger. Luckily I finally found a psychiatrist that will see me BEFORE April. During my hypomania stages, I have insomnia. I can stay up for days. My mind is constantly running in circles and I can't talk or type fast enough to get the things out that I need to say.

Usually with my mixed states... I'm so manic that I'm irritable, and sometimes psychotic. Usually my mind is just running so fast that everything is a blur and I go into a psychosis state. Before the right medication, I once went into one of these states so bad that I was hallucinating, sobbing, banging my head into walls... and went into an almost comatose state where I stopped responding to people that day and wouldn't move. My dad fed me a protein shake through a straw. In my opinion, these are the worse states in bipolar.... besides extreme depression.
Now, my states are much more mild... and the severity of everyone differs. But those were my mixed states, at the worst.
For me when I am in a "Mixed State" I normally feel agitated, on edge. I can’t relax, I panic more and I get paranoid about people especially friends and people around me.
I get more suicidal ideas and have on occasions acted on them, I find I need to be always doing something yet at the same time I can’t muster the energy to do certain things. I neglect simple things like medication and talking to people and seem to just want to wallow.
I tend to make rash decisions at the same time as feeling depressed, I cry more, I am more verbal yet also scared…
I hope that kind of helps, sometimes it hard to put things into words!
amanda, i'm sorry you've had it so rough. *hugs* i've never gotten paranoid or psychotic, thankfully. well, i guess when i first started having bipolar symptoms (as opposed to purely depressed ones) i did have some paranoia over relationship problems but it turns out he was doing everything i was paranoid about. so i'm not sure if that counts.
mazarin, you've pretty much described the way i've been feeling for the last several months. my md just put me on trileptal, which is already beginning to have a slightly calming effect. my sleep is not as broken, but my mind still runs away while i am trying to sleep! i hate the insomnia.

The first time I was in a mixed state was terrifying because I didn't know what was happening to me. At that point, I had already learned to recognize when I was getting depressed or manic but I couldn't say I was either one. I woke up and jumped out of bed. I was singing and feeling happy. I got in the shower, washed my hair and grabbed a razor. I decided that it would be just the best thing if I slit my wrists. I was so happy about it. That is the only way I can describe a mixed state. Wanting to kill myself and being excited and elated at the same time.
I hope your meds are kicking in.

crazy- i've felt that way over the last few months. not enough to act on it, but enough to really be afraid that if i didn't stabilize soon...
the good news is that i've been off everything for over a week. (the cymbalta was likely pushing me into the mixed state, so my md took me off it. i had a reaction to the trileptal, so that went away.) all i've been on is klonopin for sleep. my mood is slightly depressed but it's a very mild "pure" depression. we're now trying low-dose lithium.

I have been diagnosed with bipolar 2 but I read that with a bipolar 2 diagnosis, you can't have mixed episodes? That if mixed episodes occur, bipolar 1 is the only diagnosis. I certainly have mixed episodes and my gp has seen them in her office.
Does anyone know if this is true? Does the diagnosis of 1 or 2 actually matter?

beth, i believe that you can have mixed states with both bp1 and bp2. the major difference is that bp2's tend to get hypomanic while bp 1 are the more classic full-blown manics.
