I just saw my endocrinologist for the first time and she felt that going on birth control may be all I need to do to regulate PCOS. She stated that she wanted to see me after 3 cycles on ortho-tricyclen and check my glucose. Depending on test results we would then look at the need for spiro and metformin.
Is this pretty standard treatment? Is anyone else taking just birth control for PCOS?

That is the old standard treatment for PCOS. On the articles board it states it's not a long term solution. Some cysters refuse BCPs because they fear what more hormones would do to their systems. I am on Metformin and a lower carb/low refined carbs diet. Both those have helped my PCOS symptoms.
I would have to agree with Jashobeam, I am on the same thing, Gluc. (met) and the IR diet and the is controlling my symptoms. My dr. actually refuses putting me on BCP. She says that although it works to keep some of the symptoms at bay (as Jash mentioned, it isn't a long term solution) it will not help with all the symptoms, mainly the weight gain. Which having excess weight isn't healthy for your body, so if you are struggling with weight issues, being on the pill will not help that.
I'm also only on BCP, and my GYN told me that that's my therapy until i decide to get PG, but i don't like the idea to be on hormones for a longer period.
Same for me, I'm on Yasmin till February then my OB/GYN wants me to do blood tests again.

I've been prescribed yasmin by my endo at my last appt, mainly because she told me it would help control me testosterone levels and apparently help with my excess hair. Because I'm not TTC, I don't mind taking them for a while, but I don't consider it a long term solution.

My ob/gyn told me that taking bcp's just mask the problem and does not get to the root of the cause. BCP's work for some people, others need a different approach. For long term you should ask your doc what she has in mind. Most will tell you that a diet and lifestyle change will work better for long term results.

BCP alone did not seem to help my symptoms much. It did help me to have one AF each month, but it was still very heavy and clotty, etc. It was only after I started met that my AF began to come once each month, and be a reasonable flow and last just a few days.
If you are not comfortable with BCP as your only treatment, I hope you can get another opinion cyster. You deserve the best care!

BCPs is all my gyn gave me. Over 2 years I think I tried 5 or 6 different ones. They all had their downfalls with me. One made me have a period every other week, one caused migraines, and one had me so sick to my stomach I couldnt eat without vomiting. SO against my dr's orders I stopped taking all of them. I needed a break. Plus I really want to have a child and she didnt want me to. She kept saying she wanted me to loose weight first but wouldnt even try me on Met.
I was prescribed a bcp (when my bloodwork (for glucose levels)came back fine) only and was told if I was planning to TTC then we'll talk about other drugs. The pill has helped me with many symptoms... I don't see anything wrong with it.. and I read somewhere if you take bcp's for longer then 2 years you decrease your risk for uterin cancer. Good luck and welcome!

Thank you everyone for your input!
I am just worried that once the Provera and BCP get AF going again my dr. will just say, "Yep, you are fine now." That happended over 3 times in 5 yrs, with 3 different dr.s before I got a diagnosis. Now I am paranoid this dr. will fail me too! I know that for me BCP are like false courage- once I stop BCP AF goes crazy then stops completely. Thanks for the nice way to voice it to my dr (What are your long term treatment plans...?) I like that!
