I could not bear the idea of going off BCP. No way. I did it last time in 2006 and all hell broke loose. I was off of BCP for about a year and I have scars to prove it. I never want to go back to that. Never ever. I was so depressed it was awful.
I am normal weight, had the glucose tolerance test but the doctor said nothing about the insulin levels, so my understanding is that they never checked them. In Finland we have free health care and they don't really bother unless something is clearly wrong. Me being normal weight, they probably thought I was crazy asking for blood glucose test.
OK ya'll I know this is frustrating but listen, because I figured this out my symptoms after going to um.. many doctors
Get a glucose tolerance test AND get your testosterone and free testosterone tested before your period and at the 2 week mark because that is when your testosterone is the strongest. This provides a baseline to see if it's hormone related versus just IR. I have both therefore I have PCOS (on top I also have hair and cysts).
I started YAZ three months ago and I have lost weight already and my hormones are completely normal (it takes 12 weeks) and my sugar levels are normal. I do NOT need metformin. BC worked for me! If you'd like to chat more please feel free to contact me. I have tried natural ways, and take vitamins for other health problems but in reality, birth control was the only option for me for PCOS.
Theoretically, is using the Nuva Ring "the same" physiologically as taking bcp's?

I asked my doctor years ago if there was an easier way to get rid of the cysts besides using BCPs and she told me yes but it would make me feel like I was experiencing menopause, but she never explained it! ... I've been left confused about that for a good 2 years now. Anyone have any clue what she could have been talking about?

Hey, glad to see you here! (I sent you that msg on Myspace, remember)?
I wonder if the treatment your dr was referring to is Lupron. When they suspected I had Endometriosis 8 yrs ago (turns out I don't, but I do have PCOS) they offered me Lupron which would trick my body into thinking it was in menopause for about 6 mo. The Lupron "burns" off the Endometrial tissue that is in places in shouldn't be (like on the bladder, the bowel, etc.). Don't know if this is what your dr was talking about but it's a guess.

I don't know which BCP either. And I saw a post a bit up the page stating that hormones should be checked before your period and two weeks after. Does this mean the week before your period and the week after your period? And this would show whtther hormones are from IR or not? I don't get it.
Did anyone else notice the dates of all of the research in this article? They are all in the 1990s. Many are over 10 years ago! That's longer than many of us have known we've had PCOS. The bold-type comment stating that BCPs are not a good treatment are supported by research completed in 1995 and 1993. Is there any more current research on this topic. Where can we find more research articles on PCOS?
Also, what about those of us that are taking Metformin for IR and BCPs to regulate our periods (and as a contraceptive)? I would like to know if there have been studies on women taking both.
Lastly, what exactly do the researchers mean my "long term?" 1 year? 5 years? 10 years?
For me, this artcile leaves more questions than answers and I encourage everyone to read as much reasearch as they can. Don't base your life-decisions on one article.
Best wishes all!

I post it regularly in the RESEARCH ARTICLES FORUM. The links are directly to the right of this board, and are always visible. The Research Articles forum has been in existence since the beginning of this site.
I would encourage everyone to at the very least, glance at the links to the right, every now and then - if not actually browse and/or search the forum.
BTW, here are a few that have been posted within the past few weeks...
B) The Medifocus Guide posted at the top of the Research Articles Forum. The Medifocus Guide contains peer-reviewed studies organized by category, and is updated quartely
c) PubMed and/or Google Scholar

There have. They've been posted here and at Pubmed. You just have to run a search.

Run a search, and pull the full study - all of the study authors are referenced in the article. Full studies are available at PubMed.

Yeah. Me, too... Taking a moment to run a search can answer a myriad of questions.

Im petrified of BCP bc I dont want to screw with something I already consider broken... not to mention taking ortho back when I was 16 really screwed me... siigh
My mom and I were talking about this the other day (how I shouldn't be on bcps for a long time) But I don't know I really don't want to go through the periods that I went through before bcps. So even if it causes more IR I think am going to stick to it, That might sound dumb but I had really really horrible periods before.

I have been on Diane-35 for almsot 2 years now... and my GYNO said that It will make my periods regular... but in the 2 years i've been taking it i cant count how many times it has been late or just not shown up....
I was diagnosed with PCOS in September of 2007. Should I talk to my GYNO about going on METFORMIN or should I ask her to switch my bcp???
My fiance and I have been ttc and have been unsucessful for the past 10 months (which, it may be wrong to assume, i think is from my PCOS). So this is why i am asking if I should switch to metformin.
