| Registered User | KatCarney; Do you have a source for this exerpt? It looks to be from the Letters pages of an Endo journal, but I'm reticent to present it to my doctor without a complete reference, in the fear she'll reject it. I've googled for Tomas Silber and PCOS, but nothing is coming up. I don't currently have journal access (left college a while ago and I'm not back in yet). Thanks! |

I can't use BCPs due to the fact that I at one point used them for 6 years and well I had chest pains, my migraines actually were clearing up, but when I did get them they were killer. I'm at a normal weight, I eat right and had my glucose tested before and it was normal. Won't reducing my insulin be bad for me if I don't need it?

| Very tired user Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: London ![]() | this has really freaked me out. i was put on BCP, mercilon, to control my periods at the age of about 12 or 13 and have been on it almost constantly ever since (20 years). now i find out that, apart from exacerbating my zinc deficiency by pumping me full of copper, this may actually have CAUSED my IR and maybe even my PCOS. how the hell am i ever supposed to get well if every step forwards makes me iller in the long term? i can't possibly come off it. my life is a debilitating hell of flooding without and i'm unable to function or leave the house for 10 days in every 30. i now have no idea what to do or what to ask and am feeling very distressed and overwhelmed. i thought the mercilon was the only good thing in my life. now i find out it could be the source of most, if not all, of my problems. ![]()

I don't really know what to believe anymore (??) |

| Registered User | I am also confused about whether taking low dose BCP is good or not? I have been on low dose of Microgestine for the past 4 yrs. BCP is the only thing that helped with my periods. |

He basically said that recent studies had actually shown that BCPs have little affect on IR and that there is little long term research on it and that I should not be concerned, that my focus would be to eat right and exercise, with that my IR would hopefully become better. It was a little while ago now since I saw him though, I should have asked him about the research source, he was also a lecturer at a university so I guess his info is sorta up to date? Who knows. lol!

| Registered User Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: Canada ![]() | hi all i think for PCOS women, is not a good idea to use BCPs. if there is diabetis in family history, then be careful on going on BCP cuz it can trigger pcos, and if u have pcos then dont go on BCPs cuz pcos it self is a hormonal problem, and pills play with hormones, so it is a big no no for BCPs for treatement of PCOS. i think doctors just want easy way out so they think that Bcps r great! | flower in the rain | Thanks for posting this! When I was diagnosed, my doctor automatically put me on BCPs, and never even mentioned that other treatment options existed. Its nice to learn that there are other options out there!

Same thing for me. I was diagnosed so my doctor put me on BCP. Nothing else, just BCP. Like what the hell? I have BCP. But the only thing I am thankful for them is that it cleared up my painful acne, stopped the un-necessary hair growth and regulated my period. But truthfully, I would love nothing more than to NOT be on BCP cause I personally beleive it's not healthy to be on something just to regulate hormones and stuff.
