My boyfriend and I are eventually going to have sex and I am on birth control [Zovia] so do I really have to worry about getting pregnant?
I have heard several times about PCOS women getting pregnant on the pill. Some told me that it was because of other medications they were taking at the same time and others have said that they were doing everything right, but it still happened.
I am ready to have sex, I'm just not ready to have little babies running around. When I was first diagnosed with PCOS, I was so worried that I'd never be able to get pregnant and now that I'm wanting to have sex, I'm worried that I'll get pregnant before I'm ready. If it's not necessary to use a condom, I'd rather not. My boyfriend and I are both virgins, so there's no worrying about STDs and I do plan on talking to my doctor about all of this before it ever happens.
Should I really be worried that PCOS and birth control isn't going to be enough to prevent pregnancy? And is there any other effective method of birth control I could use that isn't using condoms or just not having sex at all?
It's good that you're thinking about this before you do it!
As for chances of getting pregnant on the pill... well, there are chances. As they say, the only 100% safe method of birth control is abstinence. (not really that much fun though.) Most birth controls are pretty good, providing you take them properly. I *think* the effectiveness of various BCP is around 95%-99%.
having said that, I'm on the pill (tricyclen) and have never had even a "scare." I was 18 when I had sex for the first time and have been having it steadily since. (heh, sorry if that's too much information.)
best bet, yeah, talk to your doc. be aware that there are risks involved even though you are on the pill. talk to your boyfriend.
good luck. it's a big step.

It probably seems that PCOS women have a greater chance of the pill failing, but that's really not the case. PCOS or not, the pill is not 100%, it's more like 97% if you take it perfectly. A lot of women do not take it correctly, just because it's very hard to do, or they forget that things like antibiotics lessen it's effectiveness. So the "real-world" accuracy is more like 90-93%. And when PCOS women take metformin or low carb or other things that typically increase fertility, it might make your body ovulate sooner in the case of a missed or delayed pill. But the increase in fertility really isn't any more than "normal" women.
Chances are you won't get pg on the pill if you take it correctly. But there's always that chance. If you really really really do not want to get pg, then perhaps a 2nd method is the way to go. In addition to the pill, perhaps you could use a diaphram or cervical cap. Two methods used together will really reduce your chances since it's highly unlikely both will fail at the same time. The advantages to these methods is that you can put them in ahead of time and leave them in for quite a while a afterwards, so there's no disruption and they don't affect the feeling like condoms do.

If you want to make sure you don't get pg, wear a condom too!
My mom conceived both me and my lil bro while using the pill, foam and a condom!!
I also believe she was PCOS back the.(Took her 4 years to conceive her first) But she ended up have 4 of us under 5 years!!
So it could go either way.
For me....I was on the pill for 10 years. I missed at least 2 pills a month and never got pg! Then at age 26 I only used condoms. At age 27, I used nothing except early pull out. Still took 9 months to get pregnant. The last part I did nothing to prevent.
6 years after having my son, I was told it was good I had him then. Had I waited, I prob would not have been able to get pg at all.
So if you don't want to get pg, it is your responsibility to MAKE SURE you don't. Condoms will insure that! Keep in mind you may need extra lubrication to helps things along.

I've been on birth control for a little over 4 years. First with Ortho-tricyclen then with Yasmin after my doctor diagnosed me with PCOS. I've never had a scare on them (many off them, only because I didn't know why I wasn't having a period at the time). Anyway, if you don't wish to use a condom I would lean toward using spermacide. If you do use a condom, I've been told by a couple doctors not to use the ones with Non-oxydol 9 on them. They've been finding that it's not an effective spermicide and may make the condom weaker. I've also been told that if you need a lubricant make sure you only buy ones that are sold near the condoms (I recommend K-Y warming liquid, the jelly is real messy). I wasn't quite sure where else you could buy some that weren't buy condoms but I guess there are some like that. Also, you mentioned you're both virgins so you don't have to worry about STD's but keep in mind that if either of you get coldsores (outside of your mouth) or fever blisters, this is a form of herpes and can be passed on if you have one and you perform oral sex on your partner. Not to freak you out just a precaution, this happened to a friend of mine.
