Maybe you are allergic to the metal? I think my sister had a problem with earrings and unless it was stainless steel or 24K gold, she couldn't wear it (I forget which one she had to wear). Is the ring tarnishing and rubbing off on your finger? Maybe a skin infection?

I'm sorry I don't know about the ring around the finger question. But I too am horribly allergic to nickel in jewelry, particulary earrings. I get inflammation and infection very quickly with most earrings. Here is a company which makes earrings and other jewelry which are said to be completely nickel-free, and thus non-allergenic. I haven't tried their products yet, but plan to.

Some moisturizers and soaps have chemicals that can react to the metals in your ring.
I even heard recently that if youpoint lipstick on your hand and rub a gold ring over it - the lipstick will turn black if it contains lead. I don't know if that is true or not - I got that on email - so could be a hoax....but the lotion and soap thing - I think that is true. I have one kind of lotion that always leaves a black ring under my ring.
it could be due to any one of those things mentioned....
if it's greenish, it's probably the metal reacting with a lotion or something....
if it's kind of black and blue, it might be a bruise....i had that one time...it didn't hurt, but i think it was because i hadn't worn a ring on that finger before....
just some thoughts...

thanks ladies for all the info
The ring is my wedding ring and 24k gold. I have never had it react in 9 yrs that I have had it. That is why it was so strange?
I asked my doc about that very thing a year or so ago and he said I needed iron. There is a chemical reaction with jewlery if you are in need of iron. Try eating some greens it should help.

I have that same problem. There is the dark, almost black ring around my finger too, but it is always there, just some times...

Is the ring too tight? If not, you could possibly be allergic to the nickel that is exposed in the ring. Try a 14 or 24k ring.. I was allergic to my wedding ring and finally had to upgrade to a platinum ring. It's all about how the jewelry is made..
