I have the same problem. I've never waxed, but do shave it. I used to pluck, but my dermatologist turned me off of it (it disrupts the follicle, and causes ingrowns). actually, she said the same thing about waxing that area. She recommended shaving with a clean razor. it doesn't keep it as smooth for as long, but it is probably the best way (outside of lasering) to keep the area smooth in the short term, and not have bumps from ingrowns. i do it in the morning, and just try not to fuss. it feels a little masculine, but i got over it quickly.
generally, i wet my face with warm water in the shower, and exfoliate, then pass the razor just once in each direction (not sure if this is the right way, but i dont have a bad reaction).
I started doing laser a while ago, and stopped because i moved, switched jobs. i am planning on starting again soon, it defintiely works, its just expensive.
if you live near/around nyc, i recommend dr. sumayyah jamal. she is black and specializes in lasers specifically for our skin type. she is really helpful.
oh yeah, i don't use oil, it clogs my pores. i do use a tiny tiny bit of dermablend on an eyeshadow brush to cover up individual spots, so that the dark marks don't show, but i don't cover all of them. no one seems to notice, but i would like to get rid of it and retire the razor

I recall reading that someone had done a survey of dermatologists in which they investigated the method that female dermatologists used on themselves for removing facial hair -- the vast majority shaved it off.

I think we all felt that way when we started shaving, but I got over that very quickly, as it appears you did too. The way I look at it is If it's male-type growth, then it makes sense to remove it in the most effective way for male type growth.
bkpcos - don't you have problems with the dermablend staying on? mine sweats off (i have greasy skin) or just doesn't cover too well. i tried fashion fair cover up but that doesn't really work either

The dermablend doesn't smudge/run because I use a very very small amount. A makeup artist at the MAC store gave me an amazing tip when he did my eye makeup (and i'm sure that's what worked, i went with ntohing on my face at all)
I use his technique in my everyday routine. My skin is pretty clear and eventone, so I don't wear a lot of makeup, but dermablend works for the one or two dark spots on my face, and the ones on my chin (even though they annoy me, i don't have all that many.) This is my standard makeup (dermablend spot treat, mascara, nude lipstick). Actually, it works so well I have pretty much stopped wearing foundation...even if i am going out, i just focus on blush, bronzer and eyes.
Caution: i happen to be almost exactly the same shade as my dermablend leg cover (it is slightly lighter), which might be why it works well on my face. you could try something else. Shiseido makes an amazing concealer...it costs a pretty penny, but it lasts forever.
THE TECHNIQUE
You need: dermablend leg and body cover, a makeup brush (i use MAC 224, it's an eyeshadow brush )
1. take a tiny amount of dermablend and put it on the back end of the brush, not the bristles, this will keep it off your hands. I usually tap the end of the brush into the cap of the dermablend.
2. I dab the back end of the brush directly on top of a blemish (a tiny amount, you can always add more)
3. Then, I take the bristled area, and blend in a light, quick circular motion.
4. Repeat
I would suggest only doing one spot at a time at first; the dermablend dries quickly, and is harder to blend once it does. Another tip, I use 2-3 small dots under my eyes, it really makes me look awake, but not made up. I can't explain the difference, it doesn't look like i have on makeup, but i don't look like i rolled out of bed
The guy at the MAC store said it was like "airbrushing" your face.
hope this helps!
I stopped using lotion on my body a month or two ago. THis means i don't use it on my face, unless i really really need it. maybe you can cut down on the moisturizers?
I sweat a fair amount, and I think cutting out lotion helps my skin breathe, and reduces body odor from all the chemicals of the lotion mixing with my own. I exfoliate religiously though, which keeps the skin from getting old and ragged. Boyfriend has commented that my skin feels smoother (he is white and never understood the whole lotion thing); i agree.
Word to the wise, though; i use natural soaps only.
The problem is, I don't just have a few spots, I have a full fledged beard with 5 o clock shadow and the spots all over my under chin, neck, and sides of my face. So, I pretty much have to cover my entire face (just for it to blend).

I have dark brown skin and have a hair on my chin, sideburns and halfway down my neck. I tried tweezing in the past but got terribly huge bumps that also got infected and left behind huge black spots. Like some of you i realized that anything that pulled the hair out from the roots would never work for me...i didn't even bother to try tweezing. I just went straight to shaving and now I'm a much ahppier girl. I havte having to do it everyday but it really gets my skin smooth and doesnt give me any bumps at all...I also dont have any marks left behind. Like bkpcos-er I wet my chin with warm water and shave with a single or double blade razor. I initially hated that idea of putting a razor to my face as i couldnt get over the masculinity of it, but it has worked wonders for me...at least till i can afford laser treatments.
