Question Blood Clots while on BCP?

Hi everyone! I am new here and first want to introduce myself. My name is Ashley and I was diagnosed in early December 2005. I was then put on the birth control pill Yasmin. I was on it from December 2005 to the end of February 2007. I had to stop taking them because they caused me to have a blood clot in my leg. Although they did help my symptoms slightly...I am already starting to get really bad cramping again. I am still recovering from the blood clot and was wondering if anyone has went through the same thing? Any suggestions?

I was on BCP's for about 12 years. The only time I stopped BCP's was when I was trying to get pregnant. I never got a DVT, unfortunately mine went straight to my lungs. In June of '05 I had bilateral pulmonary embolisms and spent 4 days in the hospital. I'm still on blood thinners. It was NOT fun!

I don't really have any suggestions, but I can empathize with you! I'm looking into endometrial ablation since I'm done having children. My periods are really heavy and long, and it would be nice to not have to deal with that for awhile.

The dr put me on Yasmin last year and it caused "pinging" feelings in my legs. My father had a problem with blood clots so after it happened several times I finally stopped. It wasn't worth the risk to me. This year I started Met and I'm anxious to see how it helps. I already feel more energetic.

Best wishes on your journey!

Please keep us posted on your condition.

Wow! I'm so sorry to hear that! How much longer do you have to take the blood thinners? The first time I was on some type of birth control, I was on the patch. I threw up 6 times while on the patch the first day...then the doctor decided that I should go on Yasmin instead, since he said the side effects weren't as bad (even though I have a history of blood clots in my family =/ ) It was scary when I first found out that I had a blood clot because the doctor said I had to be extremely careful so that it didn't turn into a PE. So now I'm on some medication and I am in the process of moving back home. When I am on the road, I will have to stop the car every hour. So after all of this, I decided I am going to stay far away from any type of BCP. I was looking around the site and found that by taking certain vitamins and eating healthier that the symptoms can get better...now why don't the doctors just say that in the first place?

That's awful Did the "pinging" stop right after you stopped taking Yasmin? I have a history of blood clots in my family too, so I was actually a little confused as to why the doctor said that being on a BCP was safe for me.

How does Met work? I was reading a little bit about it on the site but I don't know too much about it. I was actually talking to my mom about that. Anything that can help (and not have a risk of forming a blood clot or any other extremely harmful effects) would be welcomed!

Good Luck and Best Wishes to you as well

Yes, the pinging quit within a day or two of me stopping the medication.

There is a lot of info here about Met and a whole section devoted to it. If you go to the link above "PCOS Message Board" you will see a section "Metformin". Click there and you will have plenty of info.

You can also go to www.drugs.com and look up any prescription to find info on it.

Hope this helps.

It started out with this tingling pain in my leg...almost like it was asleep. Then the pain progressed into major cramps that would wake me up in the middle of the night. (This happened consistently for a while until I got it checked out...it feels kind of like a charlie horse) The pain did get pretty bad...especially at night time when it would wake me up.

Here are some other symptoms that come along with a blood clot in the leg:

Pain in the leg

Tenderness in the calf (this is one of the most important signs)

Leg tenderness

Swelling of the leg

Increased warmth of the leg

Redness in the leg

Bluish skin discoloration

Discomfort when the foot is pulled upward

I went to my regular doctor and told him what was going on. He did a few tests in the office and then I had to go in for an ultra sound on my leg which then confirmed I had a blood clot. If you have any of these symptoms, I would just go to your doctor to ask and get their advice as well...especially report right away if you start having chest pains.

I hope that this helps and I hope that your leg feels better!

Thanks for you list of symptoms. I've been on Yaz for a few months and I'm paranoid about blood clots, especially because I'm in my mid-40s. I woke up with a cramp in my calf last night, and I've never had that before. I didn't take any Spiro today. I've been taking that an even shorter amount of time than the Yaz, and I know diuretics can cause muscle cramps. The list of symptoms will help me keep an eye on the leg. Right now I don't have any other symptoms except it feels slightly sore when I pull my foot toward me. It feels like muscle soreness, which isn't unusual after having a charley horse.

Thanks for your response; i am going to make an appt with my doctor (I only have one refill left on my Diane; and am seriously thinking of changing my perscription; I was doing some research on this pill and although the evidence is controversial; I think I am going to change pills anyways, and get checked for any blood clots; my pain isn't as severe as yours was; but it could be just the beginning of a bad thing...) i always think better safe than sorry.

Hi, It's no problem at all I am glad you found the list useful. I wish you the best of luck and just keep an eye on your leg...if the pain starts being consistent every night, I would just have it checked out, just in case. Best Wishes to you

I work in a hospital and I have personally seen a 24 year old woman die from PE (pulmonary embolism) Most PEs start as DVTs and just move to the lungs. If caught early they are treatable, but deffinately nothing to mess around with. Once I dealt with this 24 year old I stopped taking my Yasmin...I am requiring my DF to wear a condom now just in case and I have decided to deal with my symptoms. I don't want to chance it. While it is a very small chance that you will ever develop a DVT or PE, I personally don't want to deal with the chance. Smoking deffinately increases the risk as all comercials tell you..please listen, don't smoke if you take BCP.

For anyone concerned about blood clots, I take Garlic and Vitamin E daily. Both are natural blood thinners and I have not had a blood clot in the 6 years I have been taking BCPs. Of course, if you are already on blood thinners, you can't take these things and if you are on other medications, you should always check with your doc first. Good luck!
