Default Blood Glucose Levels

I've recently bought a blood glucose electronic monitoring system. It's the One Touch Ultra Smart. I heard I should invest in one of these and make sure my blood sugar is okay. I have never been actually diagnosed with being pre-diabetic, but I want to monitor it. I probably was pre-diabetic before I recently lost 80+ lbs. Things are much different now with my body, blood pressure, I'm assuming blood glucose levels, etc.

Today I used it for the first time. I skipped breakfast (bad I know, but I was out too late last night So I ate for the first time around noon, with a light lunch. Then I checked my blood at about 4:00 and I had a glucose reading of 84mg/dL.

I was getting quite hungry so I went and made dinner and decided I would come back to check it again, after eating. If it matters.. I had homemade chicken noodle soup. I made it with whole wheat egg noodles, low sodium broth, etc. The rest is just veggies and chicken. It's pretty healthy. I also had a 1/2 sandwich with whole wheat bread and turkey.

Right after lunch (now at about 5:00) it was 120mg/dL.

I am just getting an idea about blood levels... but I guess why I am posting this is because I am not sure about that spike. It's not too high, but why the spike so much?

I will be checking it again in the morning (fasting check). Also I will be doing random checks, and I'll have to see how it goes.. but I would like to know what you all think of going from 84 to 120... is that normal?

Any insite would be much appreciated!

sweetstar,

I've always been told to check it about 2 hours after you eat.....that is when your bld glucose should be returning to pre--eat levels. It only spiking at 120 is way good, though....sounds pretty normal to me.

I am a pre-diabetic (hoping to delay type 2 as long as possible) and I test at random during the week. These are the numbers that my endo said to shoot for:

Fasting: under 95
1 hour after meals: under 140
2 hours after meals: under 120
He also mentioned that the goal would be to only go up 40 points from the pre-meal level to after meal level.
A1C under 6

Good Luck!

Thanks that is really helpful. Here's what my numbers have been the last couple days.....
I have been within perfect limits of the above, which relieves me! My fasting was 77 right as I woke up (without eating for 8 hours). My before dinner was 84, and immediately following it was 120 (which I should have waited 1 or 2 hours). So the next day I took it two hours after and I was at 87.

So.. is 87 too low or is that okay? I will do a couple more days of this (once my fingers heal, lol) just to see if I get the same results. But I am curious as of now about if 87 is too low or it's still okay after lunch to be at 87?

Those numbers are fantastic!.... they are totally normal... in the sense that normal is 70-120. 120 is of course the upper limits so keep an eye on things over the years. =)
