Hi,
Would a simple blood sugar test be able to tell you whether or not PCOS would be the cause of difficulty (well, imposibility is more like it) losing weight?
Cause I've been exercising my butt off and eating very healthy and in two years still haven't gotten thinner. I mentioned it to my doctor briefly and he took my blood sugar and said it was normal. Would this be enough evidence to prove I probably don't have something like PCOS causing me not to lose weight.
P.S. As far as I know, I -don't- know whether or not I have PCOS.. sorry if my message confuses you, I was unsure of how to word it.
Have your INSULIN checked, also. My mom kept having her blood sugar checked, but she went years with Insulin Resistance before her blood sugar got bad. Now she is on meds to treat both. She is having a hard time loosing weight (a side effect of both IR and Diabetes AND thyroid problems from what I understand.)
I have beautifully low blood sugar all the time--- Its the insulin thats out of whack and needs to be tested. Insulin Resistance is what makes it hard for me to loose weight. A simple blood sugar test won't tell you anything. They tested my insulin before and after the 1 hour gluc. screening.
Hope this helps.
Thanks, one-hit. I posted it on there now as well.
And thanks for the replies everyone. Sorry for so many questions!
I'm not seeing a specialist.. I just asked my general practictioner. I asked him if he could give me a referal to get an insulin and hormonal test because I was having trouble losing weight. He tested my blood sugar and told me since it was fine, I wouldn't have a problem with my insulin or something like that (english isn't his first language.. T_T). Then he kept assuring me that I don't have that much to lose and I'm almost average weight and then wanted to show me a BMI chart.. grr. My BF% is about 30.. and my goal's been to get it to 21%, so I -know- I have a ways to go. I explained to him how I can do 15hrs of cardio a week and STILL not lose a drop of weight, but he didn't seem to understand. I want to lose like 20-30 pounds and can't, even with diet (I'm also a vegetarian btw) and exercise.
So yeah, he's not the best doctor. I just want to get the referals for the tests from him. He doesn't seem like a harda**, so I'm sure he'd give them to me if I asked him again.
Can someone sorta give me an idea of how to explain that if the blood sugar is fine, the insulin can still be out of whack? Cause I'd be easier if I could go in there, explain it, and then asks for the tests again.
So I should get an insulin test and a 1hr glucose test? Why did you get it done before and after?
What about anything else? Anything else I should get done or keep in mind?
cOnfused..
the body digests food...and your blood sugar goes up... part of the process, is that the pancreas then secretes insulin to help bring the bloodsugar to go down.. the reason for testing before and after, is to see how high your blood sugar goes up, after drinking a sugary drink.. it also checks how much insulin is in your system, and how well it works on bringing down blood sugar after the drink.. the test - glucose tolerance test with insulin, is usually a 2 hour test... they check your blood sugar at the start--you were not to eat or drink since midnight-- then you drink the sugary drink-- they then draw blood 1/2 hour after the drink, then 1 hour after the drink, then another hour after that. From the lab results, determine if you do or do not have insulin resistance.. yes, your blood sugar can be fine, but your insulin can be out of wack... insulin resistance.... if you have feelings of lighthead, tired, more often after eating , somtimes that is a sign.. there is good reading on this site, that may help you understand.
Hope this helps!
