Question Blood Sugar 4.7 - how 'good' is 'good'?!

Hello Cysters

Today I went to my local doctor's surgery to have a tetanus booster and whilst there, mentioned to the nurse my PCOS and asked her if they routinely did bloods and if so, what they looked for.

She said she had one test she could do there and then - and measured my blood sugar. It was 4.7. (4.7 what's, I dunno!) She said that was *good*. Which is about what I'd expected, but... now I'm curious. How 'good' is 4.7? What's typical for someone with diabetes or pre-diabetes? Just curious!

Here are the diagnostic criteria in the UK:

Methods and criteria for diagnosing diabetes mellitus

1. Diabetes symptoms (ie polyuria, polydipsia and unexplained weight loss) plus

a random venous plasma glucose concentration › 11.1 mmol/l or
or a fasting plasma glucose concentration › 7.0 mmol/l (whole blood › 6.1mmol/l) or
two hour plasma glucose concentration › 11.1 mmol/l two hours after 75g anhydrous glucose in an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
2. With no symptoms diagnosis should not be based on a single glucose determination but requires confirmatory plasma venous determination. At least one additional glucose test result on another day with a value in the diabetic range is essential, either fasting, from a random sample or from the two hour post glucose load. If the fasting or random values are not diagnostic the two hour value should be used

Wow, that's a great explanation - thanks!

Ah it was random, not fasting so I'd guess 4.7 is well low, then!

Thanks for answering that for me!

In a non diabetic the blood sugar is between 4 - 7 mmols/l (or 72 - 126 mg/dl in the US).
Your reading at 4.7 is normal for a non diabetic.

Dr's try to aim for a diabetic to have readings between those numbers. I know before bedtime my dr wants me to be about 9 or 10 as I take insulin and tablets and they want my morning reading to be 7 or under if possible. After meals a reading of about 9 is ok and is what I should be aiming for.
