Default Blood sugar and Met?

Hi everyone!

I'm not quite sure where this post should belong, but I figured that cysters with diabetes would know the most about proper blood sugar levels, so here's my question:

My mother is diabetic, and this morning she let me use her glucose meter (after changing the needles of course!) I am 19 and have PCOS, and I am on 1000mg of Metformin per day. My fasting blood sugar level was 117 this morning- is this too high, and if so do I need to go on a higher dose of Metformin? Will a higher dose of met make this level go down, and could this be contributing to my weight gain? I'm not technically "overweight" for my height, but I've always had a problem maintaining my weight and I diet and exercise like no one else I know just to stay at my current weight.

Wow- I guess that was a lot of questions! If anyone could help me understand this a little better, your replies would be VERY VERY appreciated!!

Normal blood sugar range is between 72 and 126... looking at fasting glucose results 117 it seems could mean you are in a prediabetic state.

Conventional Medicine's Interpretation of Fasting Glucose Blood Tests

70-109 mg/dL Normal glucose tolerance
110-125 mg/dL Impaired fasting glucose (prediabetes)
126+ mg/dL Probable diabetes

Life Extension's Fasting Glucose Guidelines

70-85 mg/dL Optimal (no glucose intolerance)
86-99 mg/dL Borderline impaired fasting glucose
100+ mg/dL Probable prediabetes

The metformin doesn't lower your blood sugars as such, it works by making your insulin receptors more sensitive to the insulin already in your system. It doesn't kick the pancreas to produce more insulin like some drugs do. Are you diabetic? You should do a couple of fasting readings over a couple of days and see if it is still higher. Then go see your dr and get bloodwork done.
