I am newly dx'd (3/17) and am IR and on Met. I'm still dealing with the SE's from Met but feel like my blood sugar is out of whack. I'm not eating correctly yet. I am vegan and am going to go back on the Soy Zone after I return from vacation on June 1st. I am having major ups and downs and have always felt that way and have been tested multiple times for diabetes.
I was wondering if it would benefit me to test my blood sugar at home? I know I can buy the kit at the pharmacy and test it but not sure if there is any benefit to it. I know I am not diabetic but do wonder what is happening to my blood sugar during the day and after certain meals.
Any ideas or suggestions?

I moved your post so the diabetic board may be able to answer your questions.
I know your not one, but they have better knowelge of what you should do.
You symptoms sound like classic IR issues to me.
I wish you luck with your new journey to better health.

I didn't put it in this section because I thought it was an IR question and didn't know if testing would be beneficial or not. I felt really sick this afternoon, nausea, vomiting, dizzy, and really, really tired. Then I remembered I had just eaten donut holes and nothing else. I ate a quick well balanced snack and felt better really quickly.
If I had tested while I felt sick, would it have shown anything or not? I'm just not clear how the whole blood sugar thing works.

Checking your sugars will hurt anything. Its actually how i caught my dietbetes. I always feel sick after doughnuts and my son does too not sure why. Maybe if you get a kit you could try a home GTT test. I dont know how precise it would be. If you fast all night then take your level, then eat a candy bar and take your levels at one hour intervals for 3 hours. Mayb that will give you a clearer picture of what your body is doing.

Up until recently (like, within the last few days) I hadn't tested at home. I was one of the idiodic ones that didn't think it would make much difference. Then I found out that I do have Type II Diabetes, and my whole world got turned upside down. I talked to my primary doctor on Monday about the blood test results from my RE, he confirmed the results and I now test twice a day, and "anytime I don't feel right". I was also made aware of the symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Here's the information I received from my doc:
Symptoms of hypoglycemia (low) - this can result from skipping a meal or exercising longer or more strenuously than normal.
Sweating
Shakiness
Nervousness
headache
Irritability
Nausea
Cold, clammy skin
In extreme cases, symptoms may also include
slurred speech
drunkenlike behavior
drowsiness
confusion
convulsions
unconsciousness
Symptoms of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar)
Excessive thirst
increased urination
weakness
leg cramps
confusion
rapid pulse
convusions
coma
Unfortunately, before Monday (when I got my glucose meter), I had no idea that my leg cramps, and always being thirsty was actually diabetes screaming for me to pay attention...now I know, and I can keep a better handle on things. Unfortunately, it took a Type II diagnosis from my doctor to get a meter and testing supplies covered by insurance. Hopefully, this wouldn't be the case for you as well, especially if you're IR (which it kinda sounds like you are). HTH
