When I first started researching PCOS, I was pretty sure that I had it: unwanted body hair, seriously annoying acne (and seriously annoying cystic acne which only seems to be getting worse), difficulty in losing weight...a lot of the symptoms seem to match. I've never tried to get pregnant, so no idea if that would be a problem or not. My doctor advised going off BCP for two months, getting my blood tested for hormones, then checking back in.
I got a phone call from the doctor's office today that the results came back normal.
I'm confused. Did I misdiagnose myself? What else could this be?
Obviously I still need to talk to my doctor but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same thing?
Had you had irregular periods before you started on the birth control pills? And, did they test for your thyroid hormones, TSH, T3, T4? Have you ever had a transvaginal sonogram of your ovaries and uterus? Don't get discouraged. I have been bouncing back and forth between 2 docs. One thinks I have PCOS one thinks that I don't. I'm still trucking along trying to find out what is going on.
There are many factors that cause the symptoms of PCOS and doctors should not rule out the diagnosis simply based on blood tests. I would get another opinion and keep off the birth control pills until after you get that second opinion.
I'm not exactly sure which ones they tested for (like I said, I obviously still need to talk to them). I guess I was curious if there are any other syndromes/problems that could be the cause of all of this. Could it also be possible that I still have aftereffects from the pill in my system? I was on it for 13 years non-stop.
Being off the pill is bad for me because I get really horrible periods on the first day, as in I can't go to work or really function. My stomach is sensitive to a lot of painkillers, so the pill has been helpful in regulating this problem.
My GP told me my hormone levels were within the normal levels so therefore it wasn't PCOS (I'd also had an ultrasound that didn't show enough cysts on my ovaries), so I asked for a referral to a Gyno because I was sure it was PCOS, and he said straight away that it was.... that while the hormones were within the normal levels, it was still unbalanced - I have more male hormones than I should.
So perhaps go back and keep at it for a diagnosis, or get a second opinion.
see if you can get yourself a copy of your lab results. my GP had said my results were normal too, but when i got the copy for myself, my LH/FSH ratio was off and my testosterone was high.
GL to you!

Thanks to everyone for your answers. I'm going in on Wednesday to talk to her. My doctor has been very nice so far; she's a GP, not a specialist, but she certainly seems willing to take my opinions and concerns seriously. So I guess I will see then!
