Has anyone suffered serious blood loss after a D&C?
Days after the D&C, my blood count is still extremely low. Not low enough to be dangerous, but low enough that I can get a 2 unit transfusion if I want. The other option is 4 weeks of bedrest.
I don't know if I can handle the bedrest, but at the same time, I'm just not thrilled about another IV. They had a VERY difficult time sticking me last time (had to try 3 times!) and I still get anxiety over needles. The increased emotions make it even worse.
Has anyone had this happen to them? What did you do?
I think I might cave and just get the transfusion, but only if they can numb the area before inserting the needle and maybe even give me something orally to calm my nerves.
How low are you? My post D&C Hb was 9.1 Two weeks later I was back to normal (12.7). If your iron stores are good, your body can get you back up to normal pretty quick. This all depends on how well you ate or took prenatals for the last 6 months. GL.
PS. ICU docs always work by a rule that under 7 always gets transfused.

I had a 2 unit blood transfusion after 21 week my loss.
After the D&C (for placenta) I think my count was a 6 or something. I was SEVERELY anemic before delivery though, so my story may be a bit more severe than you, not sure.
In my situation, I knew I had to do the transfusion and got it done before I left the hospital. I still had an IV in from the D&C, so I don't even remember them sticking me. I cannot even describe how different I felt just 10 min after the blood got started. Everyone in the room could see the difference in my face (from white/gray to a normal pinky color). It would have been a long road to recovery had I not done it. Even with the transfusion, I was weak for about 2 weeks.
I did end up getting the transfusion in a nutty situation. Saturday night, I was bleeding pretty heavily. Afraid that I didn't have much to spare (my iron was 7.1 and Dr. said I can't afford to lose much more blood) I went to the ER and got the transfusion. It was a terrible ordeal, but I'm blad it's over.
I no longer look like a gray corpse, but I STILL have to stay on bedrest for 2 weeks because I'm still severely anemic.
