So I had my follow up with the doctor. She says all my levels are within normal range. I just wanted to cry. I know something is wrong. She went ahead and prescribed Ovcon and Spiro and Vaniqua but not Met. But I also asked for a copy of my lab work and compared it to some of the stuff I read here and noticed I do not have all the tests. So could that be why it doesnt look like I have PCOS? I mean, if no testing was done for LH or DHEAS or some other stuff how can they say I don't have it? I read some of the posts that says you can have it with "normal" blood test so I am just going to keep on, keeping on and live best I can. We'll see what happens and how I feel once I am on all the meds for a while. One question though. Since I was not prescribed Met, is there anything I can take over the counter to help?
If you haven't received all the necessary tests, I think your first step should be asking for/demanding them from your doctor! Or finding a new doctor who will test you fully if your current one disagrees. LH/FSH ratios are really important for evaluating whether you have PCOS; I would see that as a red flag if my doctor ignored it (same for the DHEAS).
As for the medication you were already prescribed, I don't think it would hurt to take them anyway. Sometimes BCPs work just as well as Met for controlling a majority of your hormone levels. If you're concerned at all about IR, you can take cinnamon (as a spice or in capsules) to help control your blood sugar and insulin levels.
Hope that helps!

welcome to sc i agree with pp - if you arent happy with your dr see a different one. I had to change gp to get any pcos help. I am one of the pcos girls who has normal blood tests, too. But i am definately a pcos girl.

All my bloodwork shows up fine too. Have you had ultrasounds done? I'm fine except I have the typical ovaries so that is how my doctor made the diagnosis... that and insulin resistance.

I'm in the beginning process of my PCOS journey, and just like you, all of my blood tests that were done all came back normal. There are some times where you need to be your own patient advocate. A lot of doctors aren't used to people being aggressive about their own healthcare, but make your voice heard! The RN asked if I wanted to just go ahead and get some cream for my facial hair or "If you like, I guess we could schedule you for a pelvic ultrasound." I'm sorry but I don't want to just cover up my symptoms, I want to figure out why what is happening, is happening!

There's always Vinegar...
Quote:
Vinegar's effects were comparable to those from antidiabetes drugs like metformin, researchers said.
In the study, which involved 29 people, one-third had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, one-third had signs that they could develop diabetes and one-third were healthy. Each individual was given either a vinegar dose or a placebo prior to eating a high-carbohydrate breakfast, and one week later were given the opposite drink and the same breakfast.
Results indicated that:
All groups had better blood readings with the vinegar than with the placebo
People with prediabetic symptoms benefited the most from the vinegar, with blood-glucose concentrations cut by almost half
People with diabetes improved their blood-glucose levels by 25 percent with the vinegar
People with prediabetic symptoms had lower blood-glucose levels than healthy participants after both drank vinegar
A follow-up study geared at testing vinegar's long-term effects also found that taking vinegar yielded a pleasant side effect: moderate weight loss. In the four-week study, half of participants took a two-tablespoon dose of vinegar prior to each of two meals daily, while the other half were told to avoid vinegar.
Participants taking the vinegar lost an average of two pounds over the four-week period, while weight remained constant in the non-vinegar group. And some participants taking vinegar lost up to four pounds.
Let me start by telling you a little bit about myself. I am 31 yrs old and have been on bc since I as 14yrs old because I did not have regular cycles and when I had them I would bleed so heavily and long that I would get anemic. So at that time my endo but me on glucaphage and bc. But when I changed doc they took me off of glucaphage because she told me I was not a diabetic and being young I did not question it. So I have been on bc all this time but is not until recently that I was told I have PCOS and my gyn put me on the NuvaRing but I had to discontinue it because it was giving me problems. Now i am off of it and started to see an endo and she has run blood work on me and has told me that my testosterone levels are normal and she thinks maybe I don't have PCOS because my labs are coming back normal. I have all the syptoms of PCOS acne, oily skin, overweight, alopecia, hirsutism, dark skin patches. She thinks this becuase i told her that the few times I have tried being off of bc I get really heavy cycles and are very long and the last time it happened I had to go to my gyn to get progesterone to stop the bleeding. My new endo is basing that I don't have PCOS on this solely. I just went to my gyn today and I told her what my endo had said and she told me she should stick to just her line of work and not stray from that. My question is that I have shown that I am borderline diabetic but have not been put on glucophage/metformin. My endo has not asked for a glucose test. She says she want to do more blood work to see what happens to my testosterne levels thru out the month. I have only been off of bc since 7/22/08. The next blood work she wants testosterone, F&T&BIO, and DHEA Sulfate. What other test should I ask for? Please let me know what you think.
Jazzy girl, we're on the same boat. I also had normal blood work but every other PCOS symptom. My Doctor ever said he was certain I had PCOS before my blood work came back. When it did he said that it was normal, the only thing that was high was the LH # which could be indicative of PCOS but not necessarily diagnostic. So no "official" diagnosis for me.
From my understanding Metformin is used mostly for IR Cysters... are you Insulin Resistant that you know of? Were your glucose levels off?
I have a friend who was diagnosed in her teens with PCOS. She only just started taking Metformin now and only because she is now IR, she wasnt before.
On another note, you should get the rest of the tests done... Which tests did they run?
