Does anyone else get these? I have gotten them since childhood.
What causes them? I have used the tried and true 'hot towel and a needle' when they're bad, but also found something called 'Boil Ease' at the pharmacy.
I have gotten these since I was a teen. They gradually got worse over the years to the point of hospitalization.
Anyhow, I had gotten one that needed to be lanced and the only person I could get in to see was a np. She goes on to tell me these are common in diabetics. Sure enough, took the 3 hour gtt and it was confirmed.
I always have them but they only get really bad (huge and painful) when I do not have my sugars under control.

Thank you for answering! I don't get them often, but more than what I would like. So I should ask for a gtt? I am going to the doctor next week and I want to know. I have been tested before (during pregnancies) and of course no gd (thankfully) but I was told when I was a kid that I was 'pre diabetic' and I am now coming to the realization that the doctor meant insulin resistant. I go through these phases sometimes of that I have to and I mean have tohave sweets. And I would feel better once that was over. Like I would eat a spoon of sugar, then not feel weak etc- not even something tasty lol.
Boils and cysts are very common in women with PCOS. *knock on wood* I haven't had one in years, but when I was younger and in my early 20's, I had them bad.

I get them too... often form ingrown hairs or sweat. I find hot clothes/hot baths help a lot, there are also different aromatherapy oils that are suppose to help too. it all really depends on where they are and how bad.
"in order to keep the tissues surrounding the boil clean and free from bacterial infection, it is very useful to wash the area 2 to 4 times a day with a 2 per cent dilution of essential oil of lavender in cooled, boilded water, using sterile cotton wool (or cotton pad) if possible. for drawing out the boil a hot compress with oils such as bergamot, chamomile, lavender or tea tree will be useful. these are variously antiseptic anti-inflammatory and speed up healing: they may additionally be used in the bath as more general detoxifying remedies."
I qouted that out of my book I have on natura health and healing and I find that washing and hot baths are great and really relaxing. tea tree is good for helping to clear up acne and boils and lavender is great because it can actually have many uses. a bit more research on it will help you figure out if this is something for you, but I can tell you from experiences it has helped me

I never really had problems with these, but my DH does! Gets them a lot and so I've gotten one or two since we've been together. Doc says keep clean real well and shower with an anti-bacterial soap. Also, my friend gets them a lot and she swears by a product called "Hibiclens". If you've never tried this...go get some. You can buy it at any local drug store. We bought some at Walgreens. It's basically a super-strong soap like what you would use to clean in preperations for surgury.
Hubby tried it. Took one bottle and then switching to anti-bacterial body wash and he hardly ever has problems with them now. The stuff costs about $10 for a bottle. Definitely worth trying!
Cool ladies! I will definitely try the suggestions! Anything has to be better than the needle/hot towel action I had going lol. Let alone in the place(s) I usually get them. I just had one last week, but prior to that I'd say it had been years..
I get softball sized abscesses on my breasts sometimes. Basically its just a boil that never comes to a head. My dermatologist suggested I start using "Oxy Daily Wash" or another soap with at least 10% benzoyl peroxide. It worked really well when I first started using it, I didn't get any abscesses at all for months. I have started getting them again, not nearly as often though. I should add I've been using that soap for almost 2 years.
These boils that I get are nothing like what the average person gets...In the last 2 years I have had 46 surgeries to have these lanced (Yes, full blown, knocked out under general anesthesia, sound asleep surgery). They have to be lanced and I have to be knocked out because they get so large and painful. Once they are lanced and drained they have to be packed (my record is 3 FEET of packing in my left breast, however there is generally only about 10-12 inches). 3 days after the surgery I must pull the packing out myself. During the time the packing is left in I cannot take a shower due to the risk of contaminated water making the problems worse. I am not diabetic, they have no idea why I get these.
Anyway, I didn't mean to ramble, you aren't going through this alone so if diabetes doesn't turn out to be the answer just keep fighting!
I also get cycts ..almost everytime I shave my armpits. Only had surgery on one that was on my tailbone. wasn't fun at all...had to sit on a pillow for 2 weeks. Thanks for the suggestions...will try some out.
