I had a post about this in this forum awhile back, but can't find it now!
Was your doctor a Podiatrist? (foot doctor) If not, I would strongly recommend that you go to one. They can really help with diagnosis and treatments and referring you to physical therapists if necessary.
I suffered with pain in my right heel that sounds so similar to yours (oh, that getting up in the morning...ouch!) for two months and realized that when the pain didn't go away even after staying off my feet that something must be wrong.
Sure enough, the podiatrist found a big bone spur on my right heel. Like
Noturningback said, they casted my feet for custom orthotics (shoe inserts) that very same day. Also I took a month's worth of Celebrex (a very good anti-inflammatant drug) that he prescribed and went to physical therapy twice a week (now I go once every other week as I have had improvement!
The drug was helpful in controlling the pain and then the orthotics and exercises that I learned in physical therapy helped to virtually eliminate it! It is such a blessing to have pain-free days!
I learned a lot about the mechanics of the foot and discovered that a bone spur is likely caused by the foot being incorrectly placed on the ground (in my case, I found out I was born with a crooked leg which affected my stride) causing a pulling of the plantar fascia muscle (the big muscle in the arch of your foot) As it pulls on the heel, the heel compensates for this constant pressure by growing a bony spur.
Using the inserts to correct placement of the foot and stretching the tight arch muscle to lessen the pressure on the heel have helped me to avoid surgery. I am kind of learning how to walk again to compensate for my crooked leg. I am hoping that the spur will go away (my PT told me that sometimes they do!)
Good luck and keep us posted. You don't have to suffer that pain. There is a lot that they can do when you work together with your foot doc and physical therapist.
