I ask because I was born with an abnormal amount of hair growth and sometimes wonder if I really have PCOS or if it could be something else.
Just FYI I also am very sensitive to foods in that I easily get reactive hypoglycemia and have a very difficult time losing weight.
So what are your thoughts?
Thanks! |

I do know that I have never really had periods on my own....maybe 2x/year when I very first started, but that was when I was a lot younger. I have always had excess hair growth...darker on my arms and legs than normal when I was younger, started getting spirts of facial hair when I was around 12. But I don't know if I had PCOS then or not...

Sadly you're predispositioned to have something and there isn't always something you can do about that. HOWEVER that's not an end all. For most women though predetermined to have PCOS symptoms genetically life style changes can help your body suppress it.
Environment plays a role too...especially in cancer, but then even then sometimes it doesn't matter.
If you've got PCOS you always had it...it needed a trigger...adolescence. You'll always have it but it can be slowed down or put into remission.
Really when it comes to what you are born with...it's luck of the draw. For ever child produced there is a 1 in 4 chance that it will have something their parents had.
Hope that made good sense...

I have a niece who is showed symptoms of IR at the age of 8, and the dr is stumped as to why she is gaining weight so rapidly. I keep telling my mom and sis to have her checked for PCOS, but neither has mentioned it to dr.

My Mood: Points: 4,095.67 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 4,095.67 | I'm wondering if the birth of my son could have triggered my PCOS. I really haven't had the life long symptoms like some of you ladies. I always got AF, never clockwork 28 day cycle, usually every month to 6 weeks though. I had no problems conceiving my first child, he was actually a "surprise". Really, no symptoms at all until recently. After my DS was born I went on BCP, so that may have masked the symptoms. When I went off BCP to TTC #2, that is when things got wacky. I got pg and had a MC right away. Then AF and O went away. After months of stress and confusion over what was going on with my body, I got the PCOS dx.

Some women pcos do have regular cycles. Yours were slightly irregular though which isn't always enough to make people think something is up...I mean you ARE getting a cycle.
I agree that BCP could have threw things off so that you didn't notice.
I also agree that your pregnancy could have been your trigger for the more noticeable symptoms. I have heard of that happening before. Plus most women that I have known that have had children say their bodies change chemically after or during their pregnancy.
