Default Bout to start BCPs

Hey guys. I'm pretty new here, only made a few posts so far. Still trying to get the hang of everything. Annnnyways, my family doctor told me I had PCOS a few months ago and prescribed me Metaformin, but I never started taking it. I just went to the gyno and got blood work done confirming my PCOS. But, she prescribed me Orthotricyclen and said not to take Met. I haven't had a period in 6 to 7 months and my gyno said it's crucial to take the birth control pill so I can get a period, 'cause the longer I go without one, the more chances I have of getting uterian cancer. I've also been having symptoms like moodiness and constant sore breasts and whatnot which I think is related to not getting my period. I know I need to be taking something to get my body back in order, but I'm hesistant to take birth control pills because I used to be on it for several years. I tried basically every method of BCPs. I just don't like taking them at all, and I know it sounds shallow, but I really don't want to gain weight. Haha. Soooo.. Anywho, I'm wondering - what BCPs worked for you guys? Should I even go with BCPs, or try something else? Anyone have any luck with Ortho? Any advice is appreciated, really.

Maybe someone knows the answer to this, but I've never understood why a doctor would prescribe BCP for someone to force AF without a recent AF, since the "AF" you get on BCP isn't an actual one.

With that said, was there a specific reason your doctor doesn't want you on Met? Is it because you don't have IR? If you don't want to use BCP, you do need something like Met, progesterone, or natural methods to make you ovulate and get AF on a regular basis.

I've found that just about all brands of BCP have their differences so if you've never been on Ortho, it might be worth a try.

First and foremost, welcome to SC! Second, I would recommend making an appt with a RE (reproductive endocrinologist) and work with them on a plan of treatment. They are generally (although not always) more knowledgeable about PCOS and how to treat it.

I think you should try the Metformin and see what it can do for you. For many, many cysters it is the best therapy. Some cysters do like BCP's though. It depends on what your overall health issues are. As for needing to have a period, your GYN is right. It is important to shed the lining of the uterus or it does raise your risk of endometrial cancer. However, if she wants you to have a period, I would think Provera would be a better choice than BCP's.

Maybe if you make an appt with an RE they can give you Provera to make you have a period and then you can take the metformin for a little while and see what happens. You can always go back and start BCP's if you think it would be better. I would at least give Provera and metformin a try first.

Thanks for getting back to me guys!

A period on BCPs isn't an actual one? I never knew that. I have a lot to learn, I suppose. My gyno said that I shouldn't take Met and should take BCPs because I'm not trying to get pregnant. I haven't the slightest if I am IR or not. I've only had my hormones checked and my ovaries, both are consistant with PCOS. Now... this reproductive endocrinologist you speak of... I've never heard of such a thing! You'd think both my doctor and gyno would have mentioned it. I think I should try to find one of those and see what ideas they have up their sleeve. Would this doctor be able to see if I am IR? I don't even know how they test that.. (blood work, maybe?) When you mention Provera, are you talking about the shot? I went on that once a long time ago and reacted really bad to it. So, I'm not sure if that would work for me. Are you guys on any medications?

When you are on BCP's your uterus does not build up a lining. The "period" you have while on BCP's is actually your body responding to the withdraw of hormones on the week of inactive pills.

Provera is medroxyprogesterone. It comes in pill form that you take for several days and then stop, and it causes the uterine lining to shed.

Definitely look into finding an RE. They should know that metformin is NOT a fertility drug and PCOS patients do not need to be trying to have a baby to be helped by it. Also the test for IR is generally a glucose tolerance test. They take your blood over the course of a few hours before eating anything, and then after drinking some sugary liquid.

Hey! Welcome to SC I am 25 and I have been on BCP's since I was about 12. I am currently on Yasmin and it is seriously some wonderful stuff. I did stop taking it for a bit and had that issue with my lining building up. I suggest avoiding that...I could hardly walk I was in so much pain. I have gained weight with birth control but not since I started Yasmin. I agree with you I hate BCP's cause I've been on them so long....but they really do help. I hope you find something that works for you!
