OK I spent the whole morning in a daze. Actually the rest of the week too. My poor students and coworkers must think I'm a flake and a slacker. Got up after a decent sleep of 7 hrs., so you'd think I'd be ok. Nope. My brain didn't even seem to wake up til afternoon. It takes me so long to get ready in the morning...I take over 2 hrs to get ready and I'm on slo-mo the whole time. Then I eat breakfast, I have caffeine after I get to work, and that helps marginally. Really though I need some dynamite under me. My heart beats normal/high rate even though I feel like a slug.
I am worried that my thyroid dosage is too much or too little. I can't even tell which one. When I was on a dosage once that was too high, I didn't get the jitters; I got exhausted every afternoon and wanted a nap. Pretty much what I feel when it's low, too. I've been doing levoxyl and cytomel all at 6am. Six weeks ago I was splitting cytomel between 6am and 3pm. Dr. said I could play with the timing of dosages, so I chose all at once. Easier to remember, and for a while I felt good like that. Does anyone have advice? Am I barking up the wrong tree here?

I'm particularly versed in the symptoms of both severe hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism thanks to a 4-year battle with thyroid cancer.
I experienced a lack of "the jitters" and instead severe exhaustion and sluggishness when hyperthyroid. Yes, it's opposite of the typical symptoms, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has something to do with the odd hormone cocktail that we PCOS gals experience. Just wanted to let you know that you're not alone...if you have any questions, don't hesitate to message me.

Thanks for answering Alaska. Your description of hyper sounds like maybe what is going on with me. I called my dr's office today, and the nurse said they will likely do another thyroid panel (haven't had one since June). Maybe they can adjust my medication.
Since the weekend I have noticed more shallow breathing and feel like I am tired constantly. I can barely tolerate a normal room temperature, preferring the easier breathing in a cool temp. esp at night while I sleep. Just doesn't feel normal for me!

Feeling warm is very normal for being hyperthyroid. Because metabolism is increased, your body is burning more calories than it normally would. The shallow breathing can be a side effect of tachycardia, which is when the extra thyroid hormone makes your heart beat faster (again due to a higher metabolic rate).
The fatigue/sluggishness I experienced when hyper might have been due to poor sleep, which is also completely normal.
Please be careful of doctors that want to change your thyroid dosage every few weeks. It takes quite a while for all of your body's systems to appropriately adjust to new dosage of prescription thyroid hormone, so unfortunately it's often a 'wait and see' game when trying to find the perfect dose.
Good luck, and let us know how the lab work goes!

I had a blood draw today, my endo. is doing the full thyroid panel including t3. I am curious what the numbers will be. The reason my meds changed this summer was that I was having trouble feeling alert in the morning, and the dr. let me substitute tiny dose of cytomel for part of my levoxyl (so t4 equivalent would remain nearly the same). It seemed to help so she let me stay on the cytomel. Only now am I having the exhaustion. The dislike of warm room is because of the breathing being easier in cool air. I wish I had a normal thyroid gland again.

Thanks for your help Alaska and Diamond. I got thyroid test results over the phone today, and everything is within range. TSH is under 1. Dr. noted that total T3 is a few points high, but that it is due to the cytomel in my body. Everything else reads normal. I have the option to keep on the same regimen, or take half a cytomel instead of a whole.

Thanks for the update! The quirk about thyroid issues is that even if nothing changes (i.e.- weight, lifestyle, etc.) you still have to monitor your levels because your body can change how it processes hormonal supplements.
Good luck to you! :-)
