breast reduction vs. weight loss, part 2 (semi-rant)
Hi everyone. As you probably all know, my boobs are HUGE (38DDD or F, depending on the manufacturer), but then I've still got a good 30+ pounds to go before I reach my goal weight (I'd like to at least get below the 150 mark). I've been seriously considering breast reduction over the past year, but what's frustrating is that my mom, my doctor, and my therapist all agree that I should lose the weight first, before I consider the surgery. Some other friends and family members say that it's the brakes that I've got big boobs, and that I should be happy with my curves--I wish I could trade bodies with them for a day so they could experience first-hand the rashes and sagging, backaches and neckaches, not being able to find a properly fitting bra, having to wear baggy/matronly tops, and having guys on the street stare and whistle. My mom is even convinced that my cup size will shrink if I lose weight. But, alas, I've already lost 20 pounds, and all I've done is gone from a 40DDD to a 38DDD (along with nasty stretch marks). And I see their point, but part of what's frustrating is that my huge boobs are making exercise difficult, especially for long periods of time, what with the rashes and backaches that come with it. Then the vicious cycle ensues, because when I don't exercise, I gain weight. And I read this article that says that reduction surgery is more effective than weight loss, special bras, or medications in relieving pain associated with large breasts (I'll find the link when I've got the time and energy). While I know that weight loss is extremely important for my overall health, I also know that my problems with my chest size (both physical and emotional) are interfering in my life. So what's a girl to do?
I know where you're coming from. I was a size 12 about 7 years ago when I had breast reduction, but was wearing a 38DDD. My mother didn't understand either until she went bra shopping with me one day. I would exercise, but I had deep indentations in my shoulders & they caused me a lot of neck aches and headaches. After the surgery, I was wearing a 36C. After gaining about 40 pounds (before I knew what PCOS and IR were), I moved up to a 40D. If you lose the weight first, it will probably make a difference in the overall shape and size of the reconstruction. However, I agree that it's hard to exercise where you're at now. If your doctor will refer you, I would suggest that you talk to a plastic surgeon. Ask him/her what he would recommend regarding the surgery and the weight loss. He/she would have more experience with what to expect.
I know exactly where you are coming from!! I was 19 when I had my breast reduction and it was hands down the best thing I ever did!! I did/still do have weight to lose, but it is easier to exercise and feel comfortable in the clothes I wear. My mom wanted me to lose the weight too, but after realizing how difficult it was for me to exercise, etc, she was all for it. If you have any other questions PM me I have some grat resources for breast reduction information. My breast reduction was three years ago and I would do it again in a heartbeat!! Kristi
