Default breastfeeding adopted children

Can anyone direct me to some good information about breastfeeding an adopted child?

There are a ton of links on the breastfeeding support group linked in my sig. La Leche League is a great IRL resource and they also have a website. You can attend LLL groups for free anytime, even before you have your baby here. Kellymom.com is a good starting point for general info on breastfeeding, and also has some info on adoptive breastfeeding. You can also Google "relactation" and see what comes up. I have heard it can be very challenging, especially for those who've never lactated but there are some drugs, herbs, and special techniques to get you going. Mothering.com might be a good place to check too. Please visit us at the BF cysters group...we are for everyone!

The idea is really amazing, I hope you find those resources helpful. I have a friend who is considering 'adopting' & breastfeeding - I think it is a thing of beauty!

Oooh! I had the best board and I can't remember it. I will look tho.

I successfully bf'ed my son. And we didn't start until he was 11 months old!! He bf'ed for about 3 months off and on, mostly for comfort. I wasn't able to produce a bunch but it was something. I wish like mad I had tried earlier but we did a social services adoption and couldn't start until the adoption was finalized.

Good luck!! :-D

A coworker of mine who has both PCOS and Hashimoto's was able to BF her adopted son until he was a little bit over two. It took a lot of effort in the beginning, but it worked out beautifully for them.

When I was thinking about trying to BF when I was adopting I was told to visit "Four Friends". http://www.fourfriends.com/abrw/index.html

I never used it but I've heard it's full of great info.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks so much for all the info. We do not have a child coming yet, but when I heard it was possible to breastfeed I knew I really wanted to try, at the very least for bonding and attachment. I have found some very helpful information on adoption.com. I am excited to check out the others.
Thanks Again
Mandy
