Default breastfeeding and taking levothyroxine?

I was just told that my thyroid is low, so the doctor prescribed levothyroxine. My son is 5 months old, and I am still nursing. The doctor said that it was safe to take while bfing, but I was just wondering if anybody else did. Also, I am hoping that this will be the miracle for me. For years I have had my thyroid tested, and it always came back normal. I fit having a thyroid problem more than having PCOS I think. I am hoping that I will be able to lose weight. Anybody have any input on this?

Kim

hi i take levoxyl for my thyroid and i Breastfed my 23 mth old dd and am currently breastfeeding my newborn, Your body will take the meds, because you need them, there is no fear of baby getting it!! Having my thyroid in working condition I do feel better not so tired, but it never helped me lose weight, but I have real bad IR so I take glucophage too but am not taking it right now!! I do hope that getting your thyroid working will help you lose weight!!!

Thank you for responding. Congratulations on your new little one! When I took Met. it did not help me lose weight. It did give me cycles, but I did not ovulate on it. We still had to use Clomid. I don't think that I am IR. I did lose the 38 lbs that I gained with Colin by my 7 wk check up. I have no idea how that happened! But I am still left with the 80 extra pounds from before I got pg. Do you have any side effects from this medicine?

Kim

hi kim
no I don't have any side effects from the glucophage/met, I take the XR which is the extended release form, now when i tried Met which is the generic, it did NOTHING for me but I do great on the glucophage XR, the gluco XR combined with a low calorie diet for me helps me lose weight, I am currently NOT taking the gluco I want to wait a while until Zoeigh is a bit older before going back, I went back on when my 23 mth old was 3 mths old and I think the gluco made my milk dry up so I want to wait a while this time. right now I am just currently eating low calorie and so far have lost 24lbs since giving birth 15 days ago, I hope I get back down to 190 by the time I go for my 6 week check up, I know I am grasping at straws LOL!!!!
let me know if i can help anymore!!!! Have a GREAT day!

Default Kim

Kim, Hi, I have the drug info. leaflet that came with my samples of synthroid that my doctor just gave me thursday and this is what it says about nursing mothers. :

Although thyroid hormones are excreted only minimally in human milk, caution should be exercised when Synthroid is adminsistered to a nursing woman. However, adequate replacement doses of synthroid are generally needed to maintain normal lactation.

I nursed my son for two years on Synthroid with no problems. Good luck!
