Default Breastmilk Question

My sweet baby Nathan was born on Tuesday, June 24 and then went to be with the Lord moments after birth. We had planned for this to happen, but praying that it wouldn't. Our baby had Trisomy 13 and several health challenges. You can read all about our story on my blog.

I have a question about breastmilk...

My milk has come in and my breasts are so sore. I've heard of all of the "remedies" to help dry up your milk... cabbage, ice pack, binding. But I just want to know how long I can expect to be engorged. How long does this usually last if you never breast feed? I haven't released any milk (besides just leaking) because I don't want to prolong the process, but I've read about infections and such which makes me worry. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

I just wish I could nurse my baby.

Hi. Again, I am so sorry about your loss.

I checked my notes from after I lost my baby (she died on her birth date, the same as your little Nathan) and here's what happened with me:

Day 4 after birth, my milk came in.
Day 5, breasts so sore today.
Day 6, breasts ache terribly and they're huge.
Day 7, my body has finally figured out that she is gone... breasts are feeling a tiny bit better today.
Day 8, about the same
Day 9, breasts not as sore, but they leaked a little.
Day 11, breasts feeling even better, but they did leak after shower.
Day 13, still a little leaky, but no discomfort.
Day 17, breasts seem to be dry finally, but my tears aren't.

I wanted to tell you also that I wore 2 bras 24 hours a day for those 2 weeks or so. That really seemed to help. I wore a sports bra underneath a regular bra. Hope I've been of some help to you.

You're in my thoughts.

You may want to take an antihistamine or something like Sudafed which can help to dry the milk and therefore, reduce your discomfort.

I *think* it will take about a week for your body to stop making milk, although it could take longer than that for you to stop producing milk altogether (some women can still express milk for awhile).

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Josh.

Taylor after my Tre' was born still January 12, 2008 at 21 weeks my milk came in days later...I became really engorged and nothing helped...my breast hurt so bad...I had to go ahead and pump...I only pumped once a day and my milk dried up in about 3 weeks...before my next cycle came. Yes you can get mastitis if you let your breast stay engorged and I had to weigh the pain against the inconvience of making milk for a little while...

I am so sorry for your loss...

HTH

I am sorry for your loss, I just read your blog and it had me in tears...When I lost my twins at 22wks, my milk came in - i really thought it was the final straw and so unfair but I used cabbage leaves and it dried up within a week...
My thoughts and prayers are with you

They are still sore today, but feel less engorged. Still solid, but less painful. I appreciate your advice for this.

The nurses told me to wear a tight bra around the clock and to use bags of frozen vegetables as ice packs if I felt like it... I did both, and it helped. I'm glad today wasn't so bad. My milk came in the day of our memorial service with all of the hugging and sobbing, so they were more sore than if I had time to sit alone and cool them down.

(((Hugs))) I felt exactly the same, all I wanted to do was give that milk to my baby, and there was nothing I could do about it.

My milk came in after all of the hugging at our visitation service too. It seems so wrong to be ready to nurse while sitting at the graveside next to your baby's casket. But someone reminded me to look at it as proof of how far I would have gone to care for my baby, rather than a reminder of what I don't have. That seems to help.

My milk came in the day before Eric's service. I asked people not to squeeze me hard because they were already so full. I think I produced milk longer than other people for some reason. I was looking at my posts from after Eric, and I think I was still leaking a month later. It wasn't as bad as the first week or so but it lasted awhile. I did wear a bra constantly. I wore one in the shower, and when I was done, I'd take it off and put another on immediately.
I looked at the milk my body was making as a reminder of Eric. I also just wanted to give it to him. I hope it clears up soon. You're always in my prayers.

The same as the other posters my milk came in 4 days after giving birth to my twins, the midwife told me to just leave them alone and keep a tight fitting bra on, it took about a month before they stopped leaking completely. I don't know if I found it harder when they started or when it stopped
