I am on BC and have consistant monthly periods, however, several periods out of the year are just that dark brown or black blood. Even the periods where I have red blood, towards the begining and the end of my period it is that brown blood again. WHAY IS THAT?!?! Someone told me it was old blood. So am I actually having my period then? I mean, isnt new blood supposed to coat and shed every month?
I have always been curious about this. My flow starts OFF like this!!! for at least a day, then it turns to the bright red, then when I am finishing up it goes back to brown/black.
Gross, but I always wondered why and what it meant!

Mine do the same and I always thought it was normal and why you bleed each month is to get rid of the older stuff. When it's bright red, it's flowing pretty good, but when it's brown, it's slowed down and sits more then it flows...and it's also a lot thicker....and stinkier.
They say it's old blood. Don't know why it would be doing that if you are on BCP. Usually BCP is supposed to make AF lighter, and brighter red. I don't think it's anything to be worried about, but it you are concerned you can talk to your doc about it.
I used to have it all the time when I had AF after it'd been missing for several months. When I was on BCP... bright red.

I just did a search for "brown af" and was so glad that I found that this is a current topic! I typically have AF about every 9 months to a year-and I can't remember having a "healthy looking", heavy, red flow since I was probably about 17-18. I'm 25, and in the past couple years they've been light, sparse (light for 2 days, absent for a day, comes back for 2 more, etc), and brown. I feel like it's not all shedding, and it's funny that you mentioned being old blood--- because it makes me feel abnormal, like I'm rotting inside or something! I'm glad to hear it's not just me though. Hopefully this metformin will get let me get them a little more frequently, and they'll turn red soon.

Dark brown, thick blood is old blood. Sometimes blood stays in the uterus for a few days, and when it comes out it is brown. Think about how a bloodstain on clothing looks after a few days -- it does not stay bright red. If associated with severe cramping, this brown blood may be a sign that the cervical opening is too narrow, preventing free flow of menstrual blood; the blood sits in the uterus for a while, until contractions of the uterus push it out.
If your cycles are irregular, may not be ovulating. In this case, portions of the uterine lining may be shed erratically, creating irregular bleeding that is mistaken for a real period. These small amounts of tissue may flow out as well as when the entire lining sheds with a normal menstrual cycle. Because it may take longer for this blood to be extruded, it may look browner and thicker.
Sometimes an infection can cause menstrual blood to look -- and smell -- funny. If associated with a foul odor (remember blood itself often has a characteristic smell), tenderness or fever, this should definitely prompt a visit to the gynecologist.

I just had a polyp removed, and read somewhere that it might've been the cause of my brown spotty blood at the end of my periods. The polyp is said to irritate the area around it and cause this brown blood. The first period I had after the surgery was all red blood (I also had fibroids removed). The next period was shorter and did have some brown blood.

I just in the last several months have had this happen along with grainy looking stuff also brown. Only at the beginning and end. If anyone out there has talked to their dr. about this let us know what it is.
I'm with you girls, i'm on bc and the last day of my pills i get brown blood very little... then 2 days later when my af is supposed to start it's red... at the end it turns brown again for a day...
When i asked my Dr said it's normal for bc/pcos and not to be worried.
I don't know if i accept that as an explaination... but it helps to know i'm not the only one
