I had good results at 2000mg of the name brand stuff - glucophage. Then the generic came out and I was switched and it stopped working. There are some docs who won't let you go above 2000mg/day. My first endo preferred to add avandia rather than go past 2000mg. I ended up moving away and sticking with 2000mg for a while before getting a new doc who didn't like to prescribe avandia, she said I may as well try 2500mg but said I'd probably never get pregnant without fertility meds anway. Got pregnant with my son soon after, while on BCPs.
Moved while preg... later found a new endo... he was surprised I could handle 2500mg met - he said most people have such stomach troubles at that dose he never goes that high but was OK with me being on it. The earliest studies they did with it showed the dose range from 1500mg to 2550mg (3 of the 850mg pills). It's not at all unusual to need 2000mg, it may help you.
Unfortunately since getting pregnant with my son met doesn't seem to do anything for me. I really haven't been taking it for the last year or so... keep meaning to get serious about going back on, hoping after a break maybe I'll respond to it again. But then every time I start taking it, I think, why bother... heh.

We never talk of our lacking relationships
And how we're guilt-stricken, sobbing, with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip..."
