Default Bumpy skin under armpits

I have the velvety skin appearance under my armpits, apparently a feature of PCOS.

Does anyone know why this happens in PCOS?

Is that like acanthosis nigricans? (I assume I spelt that right?)
If so, its linked to insulin resistance. I had it under my breasts and around my ankles. It disappeared after I started met and came back a little when I came off met and put on some weight. Its now fading again, I guess because I'm losing weight and eating healthier and my IR is more controlled. (And hopefully reversing if this study at the uni I'm participating in is working!)

Ah-ha! That's what it is! I think it's a very light case of the bumpy skin, but you've finally answered what on earth that large latte coloured splodge on my right hip is! I've had that for about 15 years and was always told by my mum it was a birth mark and I had no reason to disbelieve her.

Now this gets me thinking. If the latte coloured splodge is related to IR, that's an interesting point because my mum said she always had one and she was diagnosed with diabetes II in 1998, although I think she had it waaaay waaay before then and something she said led me to think that she had gestational diabetes when pregnant with me.

So, my next question is, if my mum had gestational diabetes with me, is it possible that I acquired some degree of IR in utero? I *think* it is possible and I can't remember a time in my life when my weight has not been an issue. I was always the fat kid at nursery school (4-5 years) and I certainly didn't get many "treats" as my mum was on benefits and she couldn't afford much food.

My mum too said it was a birthmark. And then when she had a closer look she said I wasn't cleaning my ankles properly! lol

Excess insulin causes the hyperpigmentation.
