Default AN, but not terribly over weight.

I'm pretty sure that I'm starting to get the dreaded Acanthosis Nigricans. I've noticed over the past week that I have these two thick kind of bumpy patches popping up on my chest and they're slowly turning brown. Its so vague in color right now that no one would be able to see it unless I pointed it out. I thought this was something that popped up in those that were significantly over weight. I'm about 20 pounds over (5'6 and about 145-150.) It just seems to me that if I had IR that bad I would be much heavier than I am. Could this be a sign that bad weight gain is on the way???? :'(

Unless you are just overweight for your body 150 for 5'6 is not overweight, its at the top end of a healthy weight but not 20lbs overweight.

I don't think it necessarily means you'll gain weight, but it is entirely possible to have IR and be somewhat thin. I'm about 10-15 lbs. over my ideal weight and I definitely have IR. It's just one of those things that make people wonder about the link between PCOS and IR.

AN, 'typically' shows up in the folds of skin (ie Under arms, knees, elbows, neck, etc). It's not usually associated with 'weight' as much as it is associated with IR, and some other diseases: http://www.medterms.com/script/main/...ticlekey=25206

My sister has AN and she is a twig. Its her only pcos symptom besides occasional cysts. She has higher IR than I did when I was morbidly obese. Weight doesnt necessarily mean its the end all be all for IR.

my AN showed up when i was 14 and it was accompanied by weight gain. am i correct in assuming that you are IR? i hope that those patches don't end up becomin AN. i was so self-conscious about it when i was younger. it doesn't bother me that much anymore because i've had it longer than i haven't. boy i sure hope it goes away when i lose weight!

If you bring insulin down yes its a very good possibility. Mine went down with glucophage and my weight loss.
