Hi everyone, after reading through the boards here and also through the Amazon reviews, I am getting ready to buy a Braun epilator to use on my legs, bikini line/belly, and I am looking at one that is made specifically for your face (also a Braun, but I only found one on eBay, none on Amazon...)
Anyway, the reason I am trying an epilator is because shaving is tearing my skin up, my skin is sensitive and I can't shave without having very bad razor burn/cuts/raw skin afterwards. I am worried that with the epilator I will get more ingrown hairs, which I am also prone to. I read that exfoliating before you use it and using a lotion after help to prevent the ingrowns and irritations - what I am hoping to find out from you ladies that are experienced with this is what do you use before and after? I'm not familiar with exfoliating products, and will regular lotion after be ok or is there something else I should get?
Thanks for any tips or advice you have - I need all the help I can get in this particular battle!!

Sorry, I can't help with epilator info -- but though I've a desperately sensitive skin I have never had razor burn on cuts or raw skin from my (men's-type) Norelco electric razors. Worth a try if the epilator doesn't work out.
for exfoliating, i recommend good old st. ives apricot scrub. i'm prone to ingrown hairs too and i've found this stuff really helps out. as for preventing irritation, after a long period of trying out many different lotions, the best i've found so far are the regular vaseline conditioning stuff or the st. ives with vitamin e. (i think maybe the vitamin e has something to do with it because the vaseline has vitamin e too.) all that stuff is really inexpensive, too. good luck with your epilating! tell me how the braun works. i have an emjoi brand epilator and i'm not sure it works as well as it should.
whatever you do, avoid scented lotion because it will BURN.
joyblack - thanks for the Norelco tip! I was considering trying an electric shaver, but then read how so many people are happy with the epilation so I decided I would try it. If it doesn't work out I will try the Norelco next!
brownmouse - I love St. Ives products! So if I got the apricot scrub and some kind of exfoliating glove that should do the trick? I will look for their lotion with vitamin E also, I read somewhere about people using aloe lotion and tea tree lotion as well, but I haven't looked to see if those are readily available at the store. I know St. Ives is though!

If you use the epilator as directed, and if you use a loofah or nylon poof in the shower every day, you shouldn't get many ingrowns. Make sure that you follow the directions on the epilator (usually holding the skin taut, doing a small area at a time, and maintaining a 90-degree angle).
I use the emjoi optima and love it. Exfoliating helps--I also use the St Ives apricot scrub. Afterwords, I use vitamin E oil--it really helps soothe irritation and helps soften my skin.
If you want an inexpensive exfoliating product that has no scent, take brown sugar and either some olive oil or vegetable oil and mix in a resealable container. Costs pennies, and works like a charm. Apply, rub with your hands, wait a few seconds, rinse and continue your shower. I do this the day I'm going to get waxed. I've learnt my lesson from self wax, ended up with a massive bruise from pulling a strip the day before my physcial. It was good for a laugh.

Any tips on which to buy to get the least pain??? I was thinking of buying one of those with the ice strip to 'numb' the area just before it yanks.... I have been waxing or many years and they always say to make sure you pull the strip off close to the skin, not away from you. So, I am concerned that the epilators will just pull the hairs straight out at 90 degrees from the skin, sounds really painful to me?
Any tips on pain reduction?

the only thing i can say about the epilator for the face is to get one that plucks the fewest hairs at the same time. there are ones that have just 1 row of pluckers.. mine has 3, and while it takes less time to pluck, it makes my entire face break out, and is very painful.

I had the epilady a while back because my legs & other areas are so sensitive. Depilatory creams cause a horrible skin reaction. It ended up being too irritating, no matter what I did (legs, etc filled with small red raised dots). I finally broke down & bought a real expensive rechargable razor. Other than a few ingrown hairs her & there it is a lot better than shaving. Don't know why I didn't think of it sooner. Good luck with it. They are probably made a lot better now than when I got mine. Just be sure to take proper care of your skin before & after to lessen irritation.
I have an emjoi. Works great. As far as minimizing pain goes, I start in areas that have less hair and work my way into hairier areas with short back and forth strokes. This seems to help a lot, because I'm only going over a small area of dense hair at a time. Eventually, your skin gets numb and you really can't feel a thing. Taking Tylenol or Aleve an hour before you epilate can help too.
I use it on my arms and legs mostly. I used to use it on my bikini and underarms, but that was really painful and I decided to just get it all lasered off. I've probably done about 15 treatments and still not done, but close. So worth it!
