LaBig- I took 1500 met XR w/ Byetta. My dos says this is a common combo. I recently quit both the meds since I got my bfp & I really didn't have too much more weight to lose. Now I hope that I don't gain too much weight...aye aye aye, what a journey!

Jessie, did you take all the Met at one time? If so, what time of day did you take it. I take the Byetta before breakfast and before dinner, and am wondering where I would best fit in the Met (again, if dr. agrees).

Just wanted to update! I've been on Met XR w/ Byetta for three months. The first months just the 5mcg now the last two months the 10 mcg. I'm just going into my fourth month. I was not ill on the 5mcg but when I moved up, I've had a lot of nausea. I've combatted it by eatting very little and I've found that if I eat bland, lighter foods it helps. I've been keeping gluten free just bc the rice products are easier on my stomach than the heavier wheat products. In the past few months, I've felt too ill to work out. Everytime I tried to run I would get really sick and vomit in the bushes on the side of the road or something. So without really working out, I've lost 20 lbs.
This month I've been strategic about my workouts. I'm trying to give myself a shot several hours before I swim laps. We'll see if/how I progress keep your fingers crossed!
First off, I am so glad I found this site. I knew of soulcysters for a while but never joined as a member. I wanted to find out more about Byetta and IR as my prescription starts today. I was dx with PCOS around 15 years ago. IR around 5 years ago. Of course, I have all of the symptoms that go along with it, including obesity, infertility, etc.
I recently lost a baby at 4 months in 10/08 due to severe birth defects. The baby had Sirenomelia. I had to terminate the pregnancy and it was the worst experience of my life. I could go on and on about that, but that is not what I am here for. The moral of that story was, The Baby's rare condition (1 in 100,000) is linked mostly to women who are diabetic.
After I recovered slightly I thought about it and realized that all signs were now pointing to me doing something more about my health and weight issues. Was I heading more towards diabetes or was the IR to blame and had the same damaging effects on the fetus? I didn't really blame myself as no-one knows for sure what the cause was. What I really wanted out of all this horror, was something good, however small to come from this. What if that something good was taking better care of my body? I just recently (2 months ago) changed to a low glycemic diet. It has helped, I feel better but the weight is not dropping off as much as I would have hoped, maybe only 10#. I realize this can be attributed to IR.
gdesshill, welcome!
May I ask a question to you and others who have tried to concieve, what have doctors said about complications with pregnancy and IR, continuing medications such as Met & Byetta (esp Byetta injections?). Just curious, we're not TTC (still in mid 20's) yet but I have a terrible fear of having children bc my grandmother passed in childbirth, she had juvenile diabetes.
PS I know this may not be the place to ask but since some of the byetta ladies have been there, with and without byetta, just thought I would ask!
LaBig- I think it's a case by case basis, depending on how yor body tolerates the Met...I took all 3 horse pills in the morning, on an empty stomach. LOL, I'm SURE this is not conventional, but it worked fine for me. When I first stared Met the nurse told me to take it 3x a day, but that was to hard to keep up with. Apparently that's ok for regular Met, but the XR should be taken all at once. When I asked my RE if I could take it all at once, he said yes- that's the way I the XR version should be taken. I'm not sure if Met XR on an empty stomach is a good idea for everyone else, but I tolerate it quite well.
Champ- I stopped Byetta when I found out I was preggers. I was taking it for weight loss, not b/c of diabetes or anything like that. But I have read about someone on here that took it her entire pregnancy & did great. I don't remember who it was, was it you LaBig? My RE told me to stop the Met today at my 7 week u/s, but I actually stopped it about a week ago when my RX run out & I knew I wouldn't be on it much longer. Met & pregnancy is a big debate. Many, many women on these boards take it through the entire 1st trimester. I guess it just depends on your doc.

I've never been pregnant, and I don't know what advice they give for conceiving on byetta and other meds. It seems to me that there is a variety of opinions out there (among drs.) about what is best to do in each situation. A good dr. has information (medical studies) to back up their position and is patient enough to sit down and explain it all.

Hi everyone! I just started back up on Byetta 5. My HA1C came back WAY too high today, so we've added the Byetta back into my diet.
Has anyone noticed lower HA1C numbers AND lower cholesterol on Byetta?

Mindijean, yes and yes. Both my A1C and cholesterol, as well as triglycerides, went down after a few months on Byetta. I also have lost around 18 lbs. Time will tell if the numbers stay there.

Can I ask, how high were your triglycerides and how much did they go down? I've been taking fish oil caplets but they don't seem to be helping. I lowered my cholesterol by 40 points by not eating red meat last year, and then I became severely anemic at the beginning of the year, and so had to go back on red meat and iron, and now my trig's are high again. UGH, I can't win!!

I was just prescribed Byetta but I haven't tried it yet. Anything that affects the pancreas scares me because pancreatic cancer is so incredibly deadly. How long has this drug been on the market? I'm afraid that 10 years down the line bad things will start to show up in users. I'm desperate to improve my PCOS but terrified of this drug. My doc also increased my Metformin, perhaps I should try this increased Met first? Any thoughts on this?
Mindijean, in late winter (pre-Byetta) my triglycerides were up around 300, I think. I started Byetta mid-February. By May, triglycerides were around 140. I still need to work on that and my cholesterol (I still lack enough good HDL cholesterol and have a little too much bad LDL cholesterol).
I don't know if it was the Byetta itself being in my body, or the weight loss caused by my diminished appetite. Dr. is of the opinion that the weight loss lowers the lipids.

Well I started up the extended release Met two days ago...so it's Byetta and Met now. I'm just doing 500mg. Met to see how it goes. First day was ok, but now it's building in my system and I'm having accelerated bowel activity. It's not quite D, but it's more than usual, so I'm a little discouraged to have that issue yet again. Dr. said I don't have to be on the Met, but I'm trying it in hopes of further normalizing my metabolism (along with Byetta, diet, and exercise). I've really ramped up my gym visits this past week and planning to keep to that schedule for the rest of summer. Weight has gone up a couple lbs, I'm thinking it's water weight and some muscle growth. I hope anyway!!

If you want more info regarding Met, IR and TTC, email me at gdesshill@aol.com
I would be happy to give you all the info I collected during my journey.
I went off the Met/Byetta combo already, after just 5 days. I was getting upset digestion and weird pains. I feel like my body will not tolerate any amount of Met now, so I'm back to just Byetta and things are smooth. I wish I could take both though, it seems many of you have success with them.

My doctor just put me on the Byetta. I'm 21 and gained 55lbs in 9 months when my PCOS began to kick in. My dad is a diabetic and his doctor had also put him on it.
I'm on the 10mcg, 500mg Metformin, and Yasmin. I also take calcium, chromium, and One A Day Weight Loss daily vitamin, and biotin (to help with my thin hair).
I exercise daily, and eat pretty well, the occasional weakness gets me but I try really hard. Anyone have any suggestions on curbing sweet cravings? I've read alot of the postings and people say that the byetta seems to curb cravings for sweets and carbs, is this the case for anyone else?
