Lupron somehow keeps you from ovulating so that the doctors can control the date of retrieval. Its taken via shot.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!! What am I doing wrong?? I have been on Byetta 5mg for almost a month. It was really working and I had lost 13lbs. All of a sudden I am beginning to eat and eat and eat! I wait about 45 minutes after taking the shot before eating and no difference. I have tried giving the shot in my thigh and my stomach and no difference. It is helping the sugar levels but not wiping them out and that's with 2 shots of Byetta (5mg) and 1000 me metformin a day. My urge to eat at night is back as well. Anyone have a clue on this?? Thanks

Hi Christsj,
I started Byetta a few months ago. I started on 10mg twice a day. I had an immediate effect and have already lost 25 pounds (only 50 to go). Byetta has really diminished my cravings, but not always. I do have what I call "breakthrough" cravings where I start wanting to eat everything I can get my hands on. I own a bakery so you can only imagine! I get worried that the drug has lost effectiveness when I have these cravings, however, they always go away and the next day, the cravings are gone. I felt like the carb cravings were the worst issue for me. When I take my 10mg shot 1/2 hours before I eat, I eat way less and do not crave anything after. I even treat myself to ice cream every once in a while.
I certainly have rambled but my point is: Byetta has really worked for me, I am grateful. I think you should talk to your doctor about going up to 10mg. That might be what you need, a higher dose possibly? Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!

Try adding Chromium to your regimen if you are getting hungry. I take Byetta 5, glucophage 1000 twice a day and Chromium 500 twice a day.

I am trying to take my shots closer together. Taking it at 4:30 am in the morning and then not again until 4:30 - 5:00 pm may not be helping. I think I read somewhere that it is completely out of your system in 6 hours. Cross your fingers. Also I go to the Doc later this month and she wants to start me on 10 mg. I just hope I can take it and not be sick all the time. Thanks guys!!

Has Byetta thrown anybody else's menstrual cycle out of whack?

I had been taking Metformin and Spironolactone and had a 27-28 day cycle every month for several years. I have been on Byetta (10 mg 2X a day) since this past December and my cycles have ranged from 22-37 days the entire time I have been on it. And it seems like I have had more in the way of PMS too, especially during months where my cycle is longer.

My endocrinologist isn't quite sure why it would cause that to happen, but doesn't feel it is anything to worry about. I am willing to deal with messed up cycles because of the benefits I am getting from the Byetta (weight loss and lots of new hair growth/thickening). I was just curious if it has done this to anybody else?

That is totally different from my experience! I've been on Byetta (10mcg 2x per day) for five months or so and I've noticed increased shedding, not hair growth. I spoke with my doc yesterday, he believes its shedding of excess hair associated with IR/PCOS... but I liked my thick hair on my head! Now it is becoming normal thickness of an avg person's metabolism. It has been significantly increased over just taking Metformin (1500mg) which I've been on for a year now.

Regarding cycles - I've also had the opposite! Byetta has made me really regular. Before treatment I would range 28 to 60 days between cycles. Now I've been very consistently at 27-32 days.

What is Spironolactone? I'm not familiar with that one.

I've been on Byetta for 7 months and the first 3 months is when I had dramatic weightloss, almost 20 lbs. (I'm NOT on Metformin but used to be, before Byetta.) After 3 months on B, the appetite crept back somewhat and I had to watch my food intake due to my tendency to snack after dinner. I put on about 5 lbs when snacking a lot.

But now the Byetta is kicking my rear again, and I'm getting what I describe as a beyond-delayed-fullness after eating dinner. The lag can be 3 or 4 hours after eating, then I start to feel the food pressing on my belly, even though I felt empty and very hungry when I ate dinner (dinner is about 400-500 calories, not a banquet by any means). I don't notice the fullness *as much* after my breakfast dose because the stomach is more empty in the AM and I'm actively going about my day when I eat, which keeps it moving.

It is frustrating because I can still feel hungry for a while after dinner and am tempted to snack...but then I pay dearly later on. Since I have to be in bed by 11pm, it's important that I don't go to bed with the full belly feeling or else I get indigestion. I try to eat dinner early (by 6pm) and ride out the lag time without eating a ton of extra.

I guess my point is, Byetta can appear to lose its effectiveness over time but it can come back strong without warning. If Dr. has you on a good dose, be patient and see what it does.

Wow, threw up my pasta dinner last night (for the first time actually threw up, vs just nausea), and I am not sure I can stomach this Byetta! Rather new to the 10 mcg dose, but still, like a week in, so wasn't expecting this...Loved it initially, when neither food nor any sweets were of any appeal to me, but even going to the higher does it is only muffled and not quieted like it once was. I am debating D Chiro Inositol to complement the metformin instead, although I know there is nausea possible there, too, at first...I keep thinking that there are all these women here who have gutted it out and done it for years, and I just think "how can I time my eating so closely day in and day out to prevent the nausea - how long can I do this??" Like, life isn't on a clock...I guess it would be different if I needed it for my sugars...

Anyway, it's inspiring to hear from everyone with experience, and I read so many posts about women sick, throwing up, for days before they got past it - I may just not be tough enough stock to make that! But the first week when I lost 7.5 lbs, well that MAY have been the best week of my life!

I've added something new to my Byetta. It's called inositol. I notice a decrease in appette and more energy. I am taking Inositol 650 mg twice a day. I get mine from Vitamin Shoppe because they make capsules instead of pills. I also started taking Vitamin D 1000 IU. I'll post in a few weeks to let everyone know how it works.

Karla, know how you feel. For the first time last weekend I actually had to have my husband pull over to the side of the road so I could throw up. It had been a nice family dinner with my sister, nephew and grandparents. That was the first time it had hit me that fast. It does pass...but there are still the occasional times that something I eat doesn't sit right with the Byetta. I swear by white bread and an ice pop. As soon as the neasua hits I eat one or both and it seems to subside.

There is good news though. We had our final scan yesterday at the RE before starting our stims today and it looks as if the 20 lbs I've lost with the Byetta since June has had a positive effect. My right ovary, which was so obviously marked by the PCOS ring of pearls showed more a mixed up bunch of follicles and not so "necklacey". My husband noticed it immediately. Also, my left ovary which was always difficult to find made an immediate appearance.

Today we officially started round 2 IVF protocol:
150 ui Follistem
10 Byetta 2xday (been on since June)
2000 mg Metformin (been on since Oct. 2008)
10 lupron
10 hcg
doxycyclene 2xday (me and DH)

My first scan and E2 is scheduled for Monday morning. We are so excited and yet so scared. Our first round we only got one egg and my E2 never got above 848. They got one egg that barely fertilized but didn't take.

LA - I'm with you, it has been 5 mos for me. The first two I was ill and then it seemed to go away for two months. The last month has been terrible! I can't eat anything - but obviously losing weight... Maybe it will always ebb and flow?

BoenBaby - just curious but your doc said to maintain the byetta and met as you are TTC with IVF? Did they advise you about continuing through pregnancy and nursing??

I just stumbled upon this site. I'm starting Byetta tomorrow. I've been taking Met. for several years, and I took Spironolactone for several years as well. My doc. took me off of the Spiro. and I gained a lot of weight, so we are hoping that the Byetta will help. It seems like a lot of people have has success. ***crossing my fingers***

Best of luck, Think up! You'll only know if you try it. Maybe it will do great things for your numbers.

BoenBaby - thanks for your reply! A red flag went off in my head when I read your meds for your protocol, too - my endo and my Ob/gyn both said that if I were going to TTC that Byetta must be stopped prior to doing so (and MAYBE the spironolactone, too - but you didn't list that so perhaps it's not an issue). That Byetta can cause kidney damage to the baby...I would just suggest double checking with your doctor, just to be safe. But congrats on your weight loss and good luck with this cycle! It sounds like things are really falling into place with your body - very exciting!!

Whoops, one edit - my doctors also said it was fine to be on the met during the first trimester, and that studies showed that beyond that, met use did not impact development or not of gestational diabetes, which is why most discontinue after the first tri. But, of course you want to listen to whatever your doctor is recommending!
