OKay, hopefully the home preg test was not a false positive... Am gonna get that confirmed today (keep your fingers crossed).
But there is a good chance that I might be pregnant at last! If so, what do I do next? Never been there before...
I live in Calgary. Don't have a family doc. Just keep going to walk-in-clinics...but I would like some more consistency now. Will the doc at a walk-in-clinic refer me to a ob-gyn? Should I ask him to? Is there a choice in who I can ask to see? If so, which ob-gyns out there in Calgary would you recommend?
Would love to know.
cheers,
Vita.
Btw, are any of you attending the PCOS weight management class on Feb 14th offered by the women's health centre?

Generally, you wouldn't be able to see an ob/gyn for preg until you've reached 26-28 weeks. Usually, you would see your family dr. until that point unless you were high risk.
Have you been able to find an ob/gyn? Many are based only from one hospital. I would choose your hospital first, then ask your dr to refer you to an ob who practices there.
At the Foothills, I saw many many many ob/gyn's due to my high risk preg. Dr. Martyn and Dr. Hauck are very knowledgable and their office is just across the street from the Foothills. Which is nice, as there is also a lab and u/s clinic in the same building.
I also saw Dr.Lyndon and Dr. Moscovitz, they deliver at the Rockyview, and have private practices elsewhere in the city. Dr. Lyndon was my ob, and I saw her frequently. She is great at answering questions and advocating for your health.
Of course, though, your ob/gyn will probably not ne the Dr. who delivers your child. All that depends on who is on call when you go into labour.

3 great kids: DS - born Feb 2001 through the powers of Repronex DD's - twins born July 2005 with the magic of Follistim
Thanks a lot Theresa for the recos.
The good news is that I did manage to find a family doc who seems to be okay... I still have to come up with an ob/gyn name that he can refer me to..
So your post was very helpful.
When and how do you know that you're high risk?

I started having contractions/cramps etc at 16 weeks, and started medical leave prior to mat leave. By 24 weeks I was on full bedrest. At 28 weeks, I delivered the twins (c-section)
Cheers

Hello cyster!! Congrats on the possible pg!! How exciting!! I have one child and had a GREAT experience with the Low Risk Maternity Clinic. They are located in the Old Grace Hospital - off 14st and 5 ave, NW. They are a group of female docs who got together and specialized on only babies. You have one "primary" doc, but you see all 6 or 7 of them at one point or another during your pg so that whomever happens to be on call at the hospital (Foothills) will be familiar to you. Almost any family doc should be able to refer you to them and I HIGHLY reccommend them!! There is also a High Risk Maternity Clinic in town, but I don't know anything about them, except it's headed by a Dr. Hauck, who is supposed to be excellent. I'm told that I would have to go there if I manage to get pg again because I had a c/s and a m/c as well as gest diabetes.
I also reccommend taking the Birth & Babies Class through the CHR. It was an amazing experience for my husband & I as first time parents to be. We registered when I was about 5 months and started in early April (I was due May 19). We were placed in a class with 11 other couples who were due in May as well. We had about 6 weeks of classes before the babies started coming and about 4 weeks after (obviously a 10 week class - 1/week.) Maggie was the 4th baby born out of 8 of us who still get together for a group birthday party and christmas party (they're all almost 3 now!) Once your baby comes, you bring him/her to the class - there's a lot of interruptions for diapers and breast feeding but no one minds. Out of the 12 original couples, two just didn't come back after one or two classes, and 2 others never attempted to meet with the rest of us, but the 8 families get along really well and we have great potluck dinners.
