ok need help here guys. i've just switched to a different magazine and start my new job on Monday. ie, tomorrow. I also just had a discussion with my doc about my IR and she wants to start me on met (starting 500, working up etc.) is it wicked stupid to start the met this week, as in, am i going to be throwing up in the middle of meetings?
i know everyone is different and you can lessen the side effects with food.. but in general, how bad are these side effects? to be safe, should i wait a few days until i get my feet wet at the office so i don't look like a crazy lady?
thoughts ?

You may want to wait a week since you do not know how it will affect you. I have no side effects on the 500 mg, but I might on the 1500 mg. But if you have the sick stomach, you probably do not want that to be someone's first impression of you- seeing you run to the bathroom. I hope you like your new job.
Hi!
When I first started Met, I started on a Friday night. I did 500mg every night. I did wake up a few times in the night, sick. But, was fine during the day.
If it was me, I'd wait until Friday night, then take your Met at night until you are comfortable with the side effects.
Good Luck!
Amanda

I'd wait til the weekend. The metformin could make you really tired as well as give you a bad stomach and first weeks in new jobs are exhausting enough. I find I am better with routine toO, eating at the same times every day and taking my met at the same times.
Good luck!
I had an upset stomach for 2 days on Met 500mg and after that I was totally fine, it all depends, I am with the other ladies, start it on a Friday so by Mon you would feel a lot better.

OK -- u guys rok. good ideas. i think i will wait until friday! it's annoying because the met is burning a hole in my pocket, so to speak -- but it will be so much wiser to wait another few days. also, today was my first day and I LOVED IT. it's the coolest. i'm so happy there.
i will be even happier without diarrhea so i'll wait until friday

I was stressed about starting Met last month as my job is crazy, but I've been fine.
Perhaps this is a wrong assesment, but I think behavior modification really helps the side effect issue. If you are eating correctly (not just low carb - but the right mix of protein, good carbs and fat everytime you eat), exercise and take the right supplements, the side effects really will be to a minimum. I haven't had one bout of GI issues and I'm at 1500 mg now (I started at 500). The only side effect I've had is a few hours of numb, tingly drugged feeling the day I upped my dosage, but that went away. Also, take your met sandwhiched between food. Start eating your meal. Pop your pills. Finish your meal. It gives the met a nice cushion.
You're in NYC too, right? My biggest fear was being stuck on the subway and all of a sudden having to go to the bathroom. LOL. Thank GOD that hasn't happened! Use that thought to keep you eating the right things... oh my god, could you imagine? Thinking of that really helps keep me on track. There is no way I want to get sick so I do everything I'm supposed to do to the letter!!!!

p.s. Did you get your Svoboda jeans yet? They just posted new styles on www.svobodastyle.com. Woo hoo!

I started Met last month at 500mg extended release. My doctor had me take it in the evening with dinner. I was traveling some the first week and really did fine. I was watching my diet closely as in balancing protein and carbs etc (IR Diet). I had a bit of gas/blechiness the first few days but that was it. I go up this week to 1000 and I'm hoping the side effects stay away.
When I first started Met I only got a tummy ache a couple of times and then I was fine. I always make sure I take it with food just in case. If I can't take it with food, I make sure I take it with milk.
