Default Cambodia Adoption

Does anyone have any updates concerning the adoptions in Cambodia? Just curious to see if anyone knows when they are going to allow us to adopt from Cambodia again? Has anyone ever adopted from there?

I did some research, and it does not seem like the ban will be lifted any time soon -- but one nevers knows as things can change when we least expect it. Are you considering adopting from Cambodia? Maybe Angelina Jolie can help get things re-instated... just an idea...

LOL I doubt Angelina Jolie could get things going, but sure it's worth a try. The whole reason the US suspended adoptions is because there's some serious doubts to the origins of all the babies. There's been a lot of accusations of babyselling, and the US wants the Cambodian govt to get that sorted out. Cambodia is still allowing adoptions, but the US will not issue an orphan visa to a child from Cambodia, unless it's for some kind of humanitarian rescue thing - which most adoptions are not. I'm disappointed too, I was very interested in Cambodia. Do you have particular ties to that country, or just the region. You might want to look into Vietnam, Thailand, or the Philippines.

I am glad to see that Sara took my tongue-in-cheek humorous comment about Angelina Jolie the right away. I was worried that my comment might be taken as a serious one... although, given the cult of celebrity that currently exists in the U.S., it might not be that far fetched ;-)

Seriously, I think it is good that they have suspended the adoptions while they investigate the source of the babies. It would break my heart to think that we could unknowingly be adopting babies that were taken from their mothers without consent.

Just a little side not (totally off-topic):
When I was teaching elementary school back in 1994, I taught several Cambodian kids who had escaped from the concentration camps of the Khmer Rouge regime. These kids had seen horror that we can only imagine, and yet they were wonderful to have in the classroom as they were so grateful to be in Canada with their families and starting over. I will never forget these kids and how they touched my heart.

Hope the Cambodia ban gets lifted soon...

I hope it gets lifted too, and just to add to your post, I THINK it's not so much baby stealing as it is mothers selling their babies because they are just so poor and so desperate over there, that some of these "orphanages" are taking advantage of the mothers. There was some of that going on in Vietnam - I think they got in straightened out, but now Vietnam is suspended while waiting for an agreement between US and VN to be finalized.
