Default Can a 20mm follicle shrink and not release an egg?

On Monday morning I had an ultrasound and 1 follicle that was "around" 20mm. The doctor told me that it looked like I was ready and that I would probably trigger that night. They took my blood to check my levels and would let me know later if I should trigger.

On Monday afternoon I got a message from the doctor's nurse saying I would be "ovulating very shortly, possibly ovulating right now". She told me to just BD that night and the next.

Well, I did. I also take my temp. I've been temping for the past year and it has always been very accurate for me. Today is Thursday and no signs of ovulating on my chart...

Anyone think its possible my 20mm follicle just "went away"? Did that ever happen to anyone here?

It's possible to have a follie ready to go & it not release. That's why many women need a trigger shot to make your body release it. I would call your Dr. to see about another u/s.

I'd be interested to know to since with the trigger, I haven't o'd but I've had large follies the past 4 cycles (19, 19.5, 20, 21) and my p4 levels have all come back under 10 (indicating no o). Wondered if maybe they shrunk and did nothing...

Thanks Traci, I forgot to add that I have had really sore breasts for the last 3 days which has never happened before O. That is what is throwing me off. I do have a message with the nurse at the RE, just waiting for them to call.

Raq, I hear its rare to not O after a trigger shot! I cant believe its happened to you so many times! What has your doctor said about that?

Could there be an issue w/ your temps? Cold @ night, sleeping w/ your mouth open, weird sleeping, etc? Since you've O'd in the past w/ no trigger (even an unmedicated cycle!), I would say you more than likely O'd.

Raq: Are you sure you just don't have low Progesterone rather than no O? I would start taking progesterone right after O until 14DPO, test & then you can stop it for AF to come if no BFP.

Traci, I was colder than usual this morning... but that has happened before and it never affected my temps. I guess the temp could be a fluke temp. I gues we'll see.

Good point about Raq's progesterone. That could very well be the issue!

Geek, if you didn't trigger, then it is very likely that that mature follicle just stayed right there and kept growing. If that's the case, it's now a simple cyst and will eventually go away. At least that's how it's been with me. I had that issue when I was doing Clomid without trigger.

Thanks Heather! In those instances where your follicles also large or does that not matter? Also, did you have any "o" sings like sore nipples and breasts afterwards? That is what is throwing me off...

When I had bloodwork down before starting TTC, everything was normal...I know they tested a lot of things (FSH, fasting insulin, etc). I never thought it could be low progesterone, but the doc wants to see me if this cycle results in a BFN. But, I'll find out Monday what my p4 is, well, I'll have to wait 'til Tuesday for the results. I'll keep you posted

Your p4 numbers indicate O. So far as I've been told and read anything over 4 indicates O. Now it's not a high p4 which could mean low progesterone, but it certainly does indicate ovulation.

In a few of my unmonitored cycles, I had O signs around CD 20. My boobs would just ache and they would be super sensitive in a bad way if they were even so much as bumped. But my temperature wouldn't show a shift and by CD 35, AF wouldn't be there, I would get an u/s, a large cyst would show up, and I would do another round of Provera. My first cycle at the RE, it was after a failed Clomid cycle. I had a cyst present from not Oing the previous month. But, last month, I did O and still had a cyst. I had 2 follicles and it seems only 1 Oed, the other just stayed there and kept building.

I've had follicles shrink. If you didn't trigger it's possible you didn't ovulate. That's some of the problem with PCOS, we don't release the follicle naturally. However, your temps are slow and steady rising... maybe give it another day or so. Some women get sore boobs after ovulation. Hope you get some answers from the nurse.

Well, damn nurse never called me back

But... my temp was higher today and if yesterdays temp was .1 degree higher I would get crosshairs on cd15 (when my bb's started feeling sore). I am thinking Traci may be right and yesterdays temp was either not accurate (since the room was colder) or maybe it was a fluke.

I guess I'll know for sure in the next couple of days.

Thanks everyone for your advice
