Can anyone give me some advice please? is Yasmin ok to take
Well I went to the doctors (yet again) today regarding my PCOS. I have been on Metformin ER since january now and not noticed any benefits , I did have some light spotting at first but now nothing. The other thing I have started to notice is that I have become very achy and stiff! I have alot stiffness in my back and find it painful to get up especially if I am lying down. I was not sure if this was due to PCOS but wondered maybe it.
Anyway I saw the doctor and she said that I really should be taking something to help my periods ( I dont have them at all). She said that due to low estrogen my body can seem like it is menopausle hence feeling achy and having stiff joints. She is going to take a blood test to check things stuff as vit d and more.
She recommends that I try Yasmin, I have had Dianette before which was great for my acne but I had terrible mood swings. She also said that metformin alone probably would not help me and it would work better in conjuction with some like the bcp!
Does this all sound ok, is Yasmin ok to take? is there any other way I can improve my estrogen levels. I am worried especially about all this stiffness and achyness I dont want to get worse.
I don't take Metformin, but I have taken Yasmin for about 2 and 1/2 years and I have never had any problems with it. Before I started Yasmin, my periods where extremely sporadic. They are now much more regular. It has also helped a lot with my acne and excess facial hair. I am not sure if that helps, but I wanted to reassure you that Yasmin was safe and effective.

thank you, it is very helpful. I think I will at least give it a go.
You also may need to adjust your dosage of Metformin. Talk to you Dr about it, many ladies start slow on it and have to adjust the amount until they are regular.

I don't Yasmin about two years ago or so and I had a horrible experience with it. I think it has to do alot with how your body works with the medicine but it gave me nipple discharge it was sooo weird!! But good luck to you. It may work differently with you like I said it has to do with how your body works.
I really am at a loss as of what to do? I dont have periods at all. The doctor told me I have low estrgogen, but I thought I had high estrogen. I am very confused. I have been crying all day as I feel at the end of the road and dont know what to do. My skin is greasy and has bad acne, I am overweight and as I said earlier my joints are very stiff all the time. The doctor also said this is a sympton of pcos . I am only 30 and feel like things are going to get worse.
To be honest I dont even understand what PCOS is anymore.
I was on Yasmin for 9 months and loved it. The only reason I changed was due to my endometriosis giving me trouble so I am trying Cilest/Ortho-cyclen, which, in the UK is considered better for endo. Anyway, Yasmin cleared my skin and controlled my cycle perfectly. Periods lighter and less painful, plus no greasy skin, hair or much bloating. It is considered one of the better pills for PCOS, though obviously it is subjective... It is worth a try though!
Good luck!
P.s there are perhaps supplements that can help with oestrogen levels..try health shops. I know Soya is a good oestrogen source too.

Thanks , my blood test is in a week and then I have to go back in two weeks for results and discuss about yasmin.
I have been looking into alternative methods , particulerly the Femaprin thread. May give that a go.
is there any other way I can improve my estrogen levels.
I, too, am seeking natural treatments for low estrogen, leocat. I am 28 years old, and my doctor cannot tell me why my estrogen would be low, considering my age. Of course, he wants to put me back on bcp (I just discontinued Yasmin approx. 3 weeks ago), primarily to decrease high testosterone and regulate my cycles, but also to boost estrogen. Also, he told me that I needed to start exercising and including some light resistance training.
I am interested in phytoestrogens, but I must avoid excess soy, as I have autoimmune hypothyroidism.
My doc put me on yasmin to help with hormone regulation. My periods were perfectly on schedule, but the hair was really bugging me.. When I go back from vacation I may get put on spiro as well to see about lowering my testosterone enough.
I was on Yasmin for three years. I was put on it for the same reason your dr's suggesting it leocat. My periods went from alternating 21 day and 35 day cycles to 42 day cycles. I had a blood test that showed that I had low estrogen, so my gyno said I should take Yasmin. I liked it at first because my periods came closer together and my periods were lighter. But I ended up having a lot of problems with it. My periods never came on time... what I mean is that I would start my inactive week on a Sunday and my period wouldn't show up until Thursday (the latest it's supposed to start is Monday). My periods would also continue until Wednesday of the next week when I was taking active pills. I tried to perserve through that for two and a half years but by the end I had to stop taking Yasmin because the last couple months it made nauseous and I would throw up the pills (not so good). I also had worse cramping with the Yasmin than without, the first day of my period I couldn't get out of my bed. I had cramping everyday of my period which I never had before and terrible mood swings. (My poor fiance....) The last straw for me was that it started giving me headaches everyday, which I have since found out is a common side effect. After that my gyno recommended a different brand of BCP with more estrogen... that just made it all worse. I just decided I had enough, so I stopped taking BCP's at all. I think all that time on BCPs really messed things up because I stopped having my period at all. At least I was having them before Yasmin.
I started taking vitex about a month ago and my periods are back, kinda screwy (they haven't settled into a regular cycle yet, it's a little bit like going through puberty all over again ). I don't know if the vitex is helping because I have low estrogen... I'm taking because my prolactin is high and I'm trying to decrease that.
If you do try it, I hope it works. I would point out that there's research out there that says that BCPs aren't a long term solution to PCOS but hopefully it'll make you feel better and you can find something that'll work for you.
Just a side note... I think it's odd that with all the phytoestrogens that are supposedly everywhere in the world, they're in our food, drink, containers we use, everywhere, there's some of us out there who still don't have enough estrogen. It makes me wonder if estrogen isn't the problem.
P.S. leocat and brbangle-- I am LOVING the Jem avatars. Truly outrageous.

Leocat, how are things going? I was put on Yaz a month ago, for PMDD. I was afraid to start it, but I am noticing good things so far. While I have lots of PCOS symptoms, my periods have always been fairly regular, but my PMS was getting worse and worse. I would get severely depressed and couldn't stop crying, and it started to last AFTER my periods. Since starting Yaz, I felt ONE day during PMS time of that depression, as opposed to many days usually. My mood has been much better so far. And the acne on my face has almost completely cleared up. I'm finding that I don't use acne medicine nearly as much as I did before, it's great. The only thing I have dealt with so far was spotting for about 1 1/2 weeks after my period- but a pantiliner was fine.
My OB prescribed all her PCOS patients Yasmin. I was on it for 2 years, then it went to generic which is Ocella. I had no problems on either versions and got regular periods.
If you have acne problems and decide to go on Yasmin, make sure that the DR says NO to generic. I've read that the generic version does not help with acne or hair.
Hi leocat....I would highly recommend you try either Yasmin or Spironolactone...... you don't need to suffer with terrible greasy skin and acne. I reeeallly know how you feel!!!!!! I wouldn't be able to cope without some medication to help my symptoms!
