Default can anyone tell me what this means?

I went to the doc yesterday, and they ran a routine urine test on me. The results showed that I have sugar in my urine. Now the only thing I had to eat that morning was a small bowl of raisin bran, so nothing sugary. I asked the doc what this meant, and her only reply was that she was going to do some blood work to see where my blood sugar levels are. She kinda danced around my questions. Does this mean she is concerned with the onset of diabetes?

its not that the food that you are eating is "sugary" but Raisin Bran is a carbohydrate and carbs when broken down in the body turn into glucose and glucose is sugar and it will raise your blood glucose levels. Sugar in urine is consistent with people who have a resistance to insulin as their insulin is not properly breaking down the glucose in the body, so the labs she said that she would test probably are those levels. If you have higher insulin levels once bloodwork is confirmed, then your glucose would be higher and show up in your urine because its not being metabolized properly. That's why PCOS women tend to eat a low carb lifestyle because it stabilizes your blood glucose during the day. There is nothing wrong with Raisin Bran per say, I had some the other day, but typically I would add protein to it or eat less carbs for the rest of the day to make sure my blood sugar stays normal for my morning read. . That is the ideal behind the IR diet, to link protein with carbs to decrease insulin spikes and lower blood sugar.

Abnormal glucose values in urine may indicative of:

Renal Glycosuria

Diabetes Mellitus

Renal glycosuria during pregnancy

After excessive consumption of carbohydrates

Insulin resistance itself will not directly cause sugar in urine, but diabetes (which often results from IR) will. It's good that your doc will be running more tests.

Raisin Bran is loaded with sugar, as are most ready-to-eat breakfast cereals. It has 20 grams of sugar, and 47 g of carbs for one serving, which I believe is 3/4 c. Fiber One, on the other hand, has no sugar, only 12 net grams of carbs per serving, and is a much better choice. Here's a link to the nutritional info for Kelloggs Raisin Bran:
